Punk hairstyles: on trend for fall 2013

The punk rock movement of the ’70s is one that forever left its mark: not just as a music genre but also as a source of inspiration for fashion and art. The punk culture is one that cultivates creativity and breaking out from the mold; which is why a punk inspired fashion collection is usually seen as rebellious, one of a kind and edgy. For this fall 2013, punk fashion remains present, even though it’s presented in a different way. And with the revival of punk clothing comes a newfound interest in punk-inspired hairstyles.

After a break, a round-up of punk as a hairstyle trend for fall 2013: where it’s been seen, and how to achieve it.

Punk fashion today.

The punk fashion of today is a good mix of different elements that somehow gives it a balance and makes it relevant in today’s world. As seen on the runways of the different fashion weeks, punk is given a good mix of femininity and high fashion while still retaining that toughness and masculinity it’s been known for since it started out in the 70s.

Punk rock hairstyles: a trend of fall 2013.

The relevance of punk in fashion is undeniably great; that’s why it has also become a major hair trend for this season. Let’s face it, not everyone has the confidence to pull off an all-out punk look and one of the easiest ways you can start exploring the rebellious side of you is through a punk inspired hairstyle. From Balmain to Thakoon, the edgy punk hairstyles made women all over the world break free from their usual ponytails.

Check out these hairstyles we spotted on the different runways: you’ll surely find one (or more) that you’d love to wear yourself.

Let’s start with a subtle one from Balmain. This hairstyle looks like it was roughly slicked back with fingers which makes it very natural but the volume on top adds some edge to it. It’s a simple and very easy way to incorporate punk into your look.

Balmain punk inspired hair

Shorter and edgier, this look from Marc Jacobs is one that is truly punk. Before you skip to the next look because you don’t want to chop your hair, these are actually wigs. The wigs were cropped or cut in layers and then styled to look like the model just got out of bed.

Mohawks are very punk and this is what Fendi went for in their fall 2013 show. This type of hairstyle requires serious commitment so instead of shaving the sides of the models head, they just did a very tight braid and topped it off with a wig that’s been died in different colors. The result is very tough and very chic.

Note that for a more wearable take you could simply do the tight sides and mohawk-style braid, leaving off the feathery hairpiece.

Thakoon gave a sleek chignon the punk edge by simple adding uneven fringe to it. This look is as modern as punk gets.

Going all out punk is Haider Ackermann. This hairstyle screams punk (even if it’s supposed to be a post apocalyptic inspired look) through the contrast of the dark roots (painted over with white talcum powder) and platinum blonde hair (extensions). Creating that mohawk or spiked look by putting the ends of the hair up also added edge to this hairstyle.

The hairstyle features a faux shaved-side: where tight braids close to the scalp create the illusion of a shaved head. Cara Delevingne wore the style to the punk-themed Met Gala, and it was perfectly on-trend. Find out how to create Cara Delevingne’s punk hairstyle for yourself.

knotted fauxhawk

Knotted fauxhawk

In this unique style, hair is knotted across the centre of the head in a mohawk shape, without requiring you to get out the scissors. It’s tough, yes – but it’s also got a softness and femininity to it. You can’t help but feel uber-cool and chic when you master this style. Find out how to create the knotted fauxhawk hairstyle for yourself.

cavalli punk grunge hair

Punk-grunge slicked hair

Roberto Cavalli’s fall 2013 runway featured a rock-chic look that was a little bit grunge, a little bit punk. With greasy, wet-look hair that was slicked behind the ears and parted in the center, the Cavalli girl was an anarchic creature of the night. Find out how to create this slick rock hairstyle at that link.

messy modern pompadour

Messy half-up pompadour

Effortlessly cool, this half-up, half-down style is like a classic pompadour gone modern – and a little bit punky. The key is in making it messy and rocked up. Find out how to create the modern messy pompadour at that link.

There are many ways you can do a punk hairstyle, after all, the essence of punk is about letting your creativity shine through and not following rules. Punk is all about taking risks and wearing a punk inspired hairstyle is one of the best fashion risks you can take. Just one more thing, don’t forget to bring on that “I don’t care” attitude punk rockers are known for and you’re all set.

How to: Moschino’s bouncy low ponytail

With ’60s fashion still a massive trend, it’s no wonder we’ve seen so much of the era sweeping the runways. For the Moschino fall / winter 2013 show, a modern yet 1960s inspired hairstyle was created by Sam McKnight of Pantene Pro-V. The look features a bouncy low ponytail with a sleek or polished feel.

Check out our complete how to for this fall 2013 hairstyle right after the break.

For this hairstyle, it’s best to work with hair that’s been shampooed, conditioned and applied with heat protectant spray to protect the hair from the heat of the blow dryer.
Once you’ve prepped your hair, apply some styling mousse to help you in styling your hair.
With a round brush, blow dry your hair. Make sure you create volume at the roots as you blow dry your hair straight for that sleek yet still bouncy finish.
Create a low side parting then section your hair to make it easier to work with. For each section, loosely curl the hair using large barrelled tongs. Clip each curl into place and then let them set for better results. This will give your ponytail that bouncy finish.

Once you’ve set your hair, back comb your hair starting at the front section to create volume at the crown.
Now it’s time to create your ponytail. Smooth your hair on top (but don’t flatten it) and then gather everything into a ponytail just above the nape of you neck. Secure your low ponytail with a rubber elastic.

Take a small section of hair from under the ponytail and then wrap it around the rubber elastic to conceal it. Pin it in place.

To really get that 60s look, carefully comb the front section of your hair down to your forehead. You can also secure it in place with a bobby pin if you want to.
Finish your hairstyle by misting it with some hairspray to secure everything and to add some shine to it.

We all love how gorgeous 60s inspired looks are and this one is very easy to do. You can wear it to work or for a night out because this is one hairstyle that’s very flexible. You can even amp this look up with a scarf or a headband to go all out 60s.

How to: Dolce & Gabbana’s ‘Italian Princess’ chignon

Romantic opulence is what best describes Dolce and Gabbana’s fall 2013 collection. Fit for royalty, the collection was inspired by the Byzantine era and the many different textures that define it. Naturally it was only a hairstyle fit for a princess that could go hand-in-hand with the collection. And that’s precisely what was devised by Guido Palau of Redken for the catwalk.

Inspired by both the royalty overtones and the Romantic opulence, Guido created a hairstyle that elevated the chignon to a whole new level, giving it an air of romance along with both a dash of elegance and softness. He wanted the look to be something like a woman who was born into luxury and style would wear and the result was a hairstyle fit for the modern-day queen who needs no crown to show the world just how regal she is. There’s no need to hire your own personal stylist to create this look, however, because, as with all the on-trend hairstyles we cover, you can have it in a few, easy steps. Check out our complete how to after the break.

Start by applying volumizing spray on your damp hair from roots to end. For the Dolce & Gabbana’s showing, Redken Guts 10 Root Targeted Volume Spray Foam was used. This helps make the hair styling process easier along with giving your hair the volume required of this hairstyle.
Next, blow dry your hair with a round brush.
Apply some all purpose or finishing spray such as Redken’s Quick Tease 15 Backcombing Finishing Spray to the crown of your hair, section by section. Hold each section for a few seconds to dry before moving onto the next section. This will let the spray set on your hair.

This chignon hairstyle requires a particular volume on your crown best described as both light and airy. To get the right volume needed, backcomb your hair once the finishing spray has dried. It’s recommended that you use an oval boar bristle brush.

Next, create a very small (about an inch), off-centre part. Gently brush hair from front to back starting behind that parted section and then create a chignon. Make sure the chignon is flat against your nape before you secure it with bobby pins. Remember to retain the volume on the top section of your hair for that soft, romantic look.

Finish this hairstyle off by misting a little bit hairspray for shine. For the catwalk, Shine Flash 02 Glistening Mist by Redken was used.

Who needs a crown and jewels to make them feel like royalty when you can wear a hairstyle like this one that exudes confidence? Feeling like a queen doesn’t require much, it’s all about attitude and this hairstyle has it.

How to: men’s textured front hairstyle

As far as men’s hairstyle trends go, things don’t move all that fast. Short sides and longer on top has been in for a while now, with men’s hair steering clear of anything too spiked or heavy on product and leaning towards more natural yet textured styles. For spring 2014, Z Zegna’s runway show gave us one such textured look that borders modern and classic, with a pulled-forwards wave and short sides.

We couldn’t help but love this men’s hairstyle, which is why we went to our resident hair guru Annika Bowen to find out how to recreate this look. Check out the complete how-to guide right after the break.

men's textured front waves

How to: Z Zegna men’s textured front waves

Before anything else you need to have a haircut that’s similar to that of the models in the Z Zegna show. A short trip to your hairstylist will do the trick. Just keep in mind that the sides should be short (your stylist can do this by using scissors over a comb or with a clipper guard in number 2 or 3) with the top section in a longer, disconnected length. Once you have the right haircut, it’ll be easier for you to style your hair.

textured mens front waves hairstyle

Start off by applying sea salt spray onto your hair then dry it off. This will give your hair the texture it needs.
At the front hair line, take a horizontal section and spray it with a workable hairspray (something not too sticky or shiny will do). This will hold your hair style.
Using straightening irons straighten first section you just sprayed with hairspray down.
Take the next horizontal section but this time straighten it upward. Continue alternating like this to each horizontal section that follows.

textured mens front waves hairstyle

Once you reach the crown and finished straightening technique, take a matte wax or clay to put fix your hairstyle into place. Rub it through your hands to warm it up and make pliable. Make your hands (with the wax) go through your hair and work it from left to right. To get the height in the top sections, use your finger tips to pull your hair upward.

Variations: afro hair.

For curly or afro styling, do the same steps but skip the straightening iron. Just slightly comb each section of your hair. Be careful not to overdo is so your hair doesn’t frizz too much.

Texture can do wonders for you especially when it comes to your hairstyle. Gone are the days when men had a standard haircut, today, guys are free to try out different styles. As daunting a task it may seem, it has it benefits, after all, who doesn’t want to look good?

If you want to check out a similar style but with a side parting, head to our textured side hair for men tutorial.
