How to: Calvin Klein’s textured side-part hair

A Calvin Klein girl, according to Redken’s lead hairstylist, Guido, is “super chic and super urban”. The hair he created for Calvin Klein’s spring 2013 show has a little bit of a grungy feel that looks very natural and has that bed head effect to it. The simple style created for the show has a very rich and natural texture with a deep side part.

This look would perfectly complement an outfit that is sleek and preppy. It is very easy to recreate at home as it is just blow dried using fingers and it is not blown out to look perfectly straight.

To create texture and movement, prep your hair with a volume spray mouse while it’s still damp.
Using just your fingers, blow dry your hair until it is soft and has a natural texture. Remember that your hair does not have to look perfect and shiny as this hairstyle is a little bit urban and casual.

Create a deep left (or right, depending on your best angle) side part using the arch of your eyebrow as a guide.
Apply dry shampoo all over to get rid of excess oil (if your hair is really oily) and add extra texture. The Calvin Klein team used Redken’s Powder Refresh 01.
Lastly, set the look with a finishing spray such as Redken’s Forceful 23 to keep the style in place. Brush through from roots to tips to get a very natural and textured finish.

Review: Kerastase Elixir Ultime Immortal Moringa & Elixir Ultime Imperial Tea

Between cleaning, conditioning and deep hair treatments, you wouldn’t think there was much room in the routine for much else. But the hair product market has increasingly grown fond of oil products that treat, condition, and style all at once. While Argan oils are one of the most well known, Kérastase’s Elixir Ultime range turns out to be both delightfully scented and easy to use. We tested out two products: Kérastase Elixir Ultime with Immortal Moringa Extract and Kérastase Elixir Ultime with Imperial Tea Extract. Read the review after the break.

Kerastase Elixir Ultime

Kérastase Elixir Ultime with Immortal Moringa Extract

This is a beautifying oil for damaged hair, made with Immortal Moringa extracts.

Scent: One of the first things you’ll notice about it is the scent: it’s woody and oriental, blended with a refreshing sharp note of citrus. Unlike scents in shampoos and regular conditioners, which often get washed out, the scent of this oil lingers in the right way.

Application: you can apply the oil to either wet or dry hair. Run a small amount of oil through the hair with your hands. Only one or two pumps of oil are needed which is a big advantage – it means one bottle goes a long way.

Results: the Elixir Ultime with Immortal Moringa Extract leaves hair smooth to the touch, brushes through easily and doesn’t leave any sticky or gluggy residue. Hair after use is light and manageable, and does feel well conditioned – so for someone with damaged or dry hair this is particularly useful as an addition to your usual hair routine.

Kérastase Elixir Ultime with Imperial Tea Extract

A beautifying oil for coloured hair, enriched with the Oléo-Complexe and Imperial Tea extract.

Scent: As with the Immortal Moringa oil, this one has a beautiful scent which makes the whole ritual of applying it so much more worthwhile. The scent of this oil is floral and fruity as opposed to the more woody Immortal Moringa.

Application: can be applied to either wet or dry hair, and again only one or two pumps of oil are needed. You can also use the oil pre-blow drying to protect colour-treated hair from further damage and to keep it smooth in the process.

Results: Elixir Ultime with Imperial Tea Extract leaves the hair feeling smooth and soft without it feeling heavy. Both of these oils are lightweight, protective and nourishing for damaged hair, but if your hair is particularly colour-damaged then best to opt for the specifically formulated Imperial Tea version.

Easy Hairstyles, The Pineapple Braid

An Easy, Quick, And Cute Hairstyle

easy hairstyles
We have had many requests from you guys lately for simple hairstyles.... as well as hair styles that can be done on yourself. This "pineapple braid" is a quick, cute, and easy "no heat" hairstyle that is great for school, work, dance, or other occasions.  We actually posted a similar style way back in 2008 (around the time we first starting "hair blogging") but never made a video for it until now.  The Princess wears this hairstyle to school quite often since it can be created in less than 5 minutes and we are not morning people!

The Princess's dad named this braid for us. He thinks this hairstyle looks just like a pineapple or a palm tree.  I have to agree!

This style should work with medium hair, long hair, curly hair, or straight hair, and can be done on yourself with a little practice. You can create any type of braid you would like to change things up (including a rope braid, 4 strand, 5 strand, etc.) This technique can also be used to create 2 "spiked" pigtails, as well as a half up style.

Supplies needed:
  • 1 elastic
  • A couple of bobby pins

One of our subscribers on Youtube mentioned that it reminds them of a hairstyle Phoebe (from the show Friends) would wear. Yes, yes it does!  Look what I found on Google Images...  It looks like Phoebe wore almost this exact same hairstyle to Chandler and Monica's wedding!  ;)

5 braided hairstyles to try this week

The beauty of braids and plaits is that they require very little. At their most basic, you can create near endless hairstyle variations without necessarily needing curlers or straighteners or masses of product: just a little bit of inventiveness. Braids can feel youthful or traditional, casual or formal. It all comes down to the style you choose.

From the milkmaid braid to the fishplait, braided buns to snake braids, here are 5 braided hairstyles to try this week.

Watch the video tutorials after the break.

Halloween Hairstyles, Braided Spider Bun

A Spooky Spider Hairstyle!

halloween hairstyle ideas
This fun braided spider hairstyle would be great for Halloween, Trick or Treating, a Halloween party, or crazy hair day at school.

The basic idea for this spider hairdo came from one of our readers (Jill) who posted a picture of her little girl wearing a spider on her head on our facebook page a couple of years ago! The Princess and I have been anxiously awaiting for Halloween to come around again to give this creepy style a try.

Spider Hairstyle Tutorial, Halloween Hairstyle
This hair style would be cute all on it's own, or could go with several Halloween costume ideas (a witch, vampire, zombie, etc.)
Halloween Spider Web Hairstyle

Supplies needed:
  • 4 pipe cleaners (which can be found in any craft store) to create the spider legs.
  • 2-3 hair elastics.
  • Several bobby pins.
  • An optional scary spider face (which could be made many different ways.)  We used a little pom pom and some googly eyes for ours.

If you don't know how to french braid, or want to make this style easier and quicker, you can skip the upside down french braid up the back of her head and just start the spider bun in a standard high ponytail.

Of course, this doesn't have to be just a hairstyle for Halloween.  Without the extra legs and spider face, this turns out to be a lovely elegant updo that could be worn for many occasions! We love how the upside down french braid sort of blends right into the bun.  We opted for a braided bun this time, but... a sock bun, messy bun, twisted bun (or any type of bun you like) can be substituted.

P.S. We are trying some different lighting and background in this video (trying to improve the quality of our tutorials for you guys.)  Let us know if you find this video to be more clear (better) or worse than our old set up.  Thanks!

Fishtail Braid Bohemian Pigtails

 A Hunger Games Inspired Hairstyle

Hunger Games Hairstyles, Fishbone Braids

These fun fishtail braid pigtails are inspired by a hairstyle I remember seeing in the Hunger Games Movie (although I don't exactly remember which character wore them.) I think I was paying more attention to the many braids and hairstyles than the actual movie itself when I watched it!  I'm pretty sure it was either a "Glimmer hairstyle" or a "Prim hairstyle".... also I did change the hairdo up a bit from the image I had in my head, just to make it our own.  Another fellow hairstylist (which I adore) on Youtube recreated a similar style from the movie awhile back as well and I thought it was so darling. You can find her video here- Letsmakeitup1 for a few more cute ideas if you like this type of  braided style.

Hunger Games Braided Hairstyle
My daughter loves this look because the pigtails seem more "grown up" than the usual variety. I  think these pigtails could work for older girls as well as little girls. I may even wear my hair like this if it were long enough!  We're both loving anything with fishtail braids right now and anything "Bohemian" looking. Since this style is more of a relaxed look, you don't need to worry about getting the parts straight or braiding perfectly.  Just go with the flow!  If I did this hairdo again, I may even add some waves  or curls to her hair first, to give it a little more texture.

Hunger Games Hairstyle Video Tutorial:

This hairstyle should work with long hair and medium hair, curly or straight.

I'm also thinking this could be a cute Halloween Hairstyle that would work with several different costume ideas. Pocahontas, maybe?

Picture Day Hairstyles 2012

A few hair ideas for picture day....
braided headband picture day hair

The Princess has actually had pictures taken "professionally" twice this year.  Once for picture day at school, and another time for our family pictures. My personal preference for picture day hair, is a simple and classic hairstyle that hopefully won't go out of style and look ridiculous in 20 years lol.  Something that looks nice from the front, but not too "overdone."  And, lets face it... no matter how cute you make the back of a hairstyle look, usually the back of the head isn't seen in the picture anyway!

Both of the styles we chose for our pictures this year were basic headband hairstyles.  In the photo above, we used the same partings from our Barbie Hairstyle that we actually used for picture day back in 2009.  And then instead of making a standard french braid for the headband, we opted for a pleated ribbon braid  (substituting a 4th strand of hair for the ribbon.)

In the pictures below, we washed her hair the night before and made pigtail french braids (one on each side of her head) while her hair was still damp.  In the morning, after the braids had dried, we took them out to form the waves and added a cute beaded headband.  Very simple, easy, cute, and quick!

For a little extra style, you could add a couple of braids with the headband as shown in the video below:

Feel free to share your picture day styles with us on Facebook.  I love to see what you guys are up to!
