Inside Out Fishtail Braid Tutorial

How to create a french fishtail braid... inside out!  I guess you could call this a "dutch fishtail?"
reverse french fishtail braid
This inside out, reverse, or "dutch" fishtail is a very cute bohemian looking braid which is similar to a french fishtail braid, but different ~ as the braid is laying on top of the hair instead of underneath. To see the standard french fishtail braid, we have a video here:  Side Swept Fishtail Braid Tutorial

This fishtail, fishbone, or herringbone braid can be used to create many different hairstyles including: Casual, bohemian, beachy type hair, as well as elegant updos for special occasions. To enhance this braid, the edges can be stretched (as shown in our pictures and video) creating a more voluminous and disheveled fishtail.  It seems that messy and deconstructed braids are very popular and trendy hairstyles among teens, tweens, and adults right now.

I actually saw a braid like this awhile ago in a picture, and of course, wanted to figure out how it was made. Usually I can look at a braid and figure out the stranding pretty quickly.  But, this one took me awhile to "decode" and I'm not sure why, because as you will see in our video tutorial below, it is actually not that complicated!

For church one Sunday, we opted to use this braid to create a fishtail updo, which was made by wrapping the braid up into a side bun and securing with couple of bobby pins.  The princess and I absolutely love this cute hairstyle and plan to use it again for an upcoming wedding.  I wish my hair was long enough and I would be wearing it as well!

How to make an inside out fishtail braid video tutorial:

While filming this tutorial, I took larger strands than I normally would (to save time) and the braid didn't turn out quite as intricate or "fishtaily" as I would have liked.  If thick strands are taken, the braid ends up looking more like a regular 3 strand dutch braid and isn't quite as interesting. The pictures we used throughout this post were taken on a different day, and show how the braid will look with smaller strands taken (which is a little more time consuming.)

Fishtail Braid Bohemian Pigtails

 A Hunger Games Inspired Hairstyle

Hunger Games Hairstyles, Fishbone Braids

These fun fishtail braid pigtails are inspired by a hairstyle I remember seeing in the Hunger Games Movie (although I don't exactly remember which character wore them.) I think I was paying more attention to the many braids and hairstyles than the actual movie itself when I watched it!  I'm pretty sure it was either a "Glimmer hairstyle" or a "Prim hairstyle".... also I did change the hairdo up a bit from the image I had in my head, just to make it our own.  Another fellow hairstylist (which I adore) on Youtube recreated a similar style from the movie awhile back as well and I thought it was so darling. You can find her video here- Letsmakeitup1 for a few more cute ideas if you like this type of  braided style.

Hunger Games Braided Hairstyle
My daughter loves this look because the pigtails seem more "grown up" than the usual variety. I  think these pigtails could work for older girls as well as little girls. I may even wear my hair like this if it were long enough!  We're both loving anything with fishtail braids right now and anything "Bohemian" looking. Since this style is more of a relaxed look, you don't need to worry about getting the parts straight or braiding perfectly.  Just go with the flow!  If I did this hairdo again, I may even add some waves  or curls to her hair first, to give it a little more texture.

This hairstyle should work with long hair and medium hair, curly or straight.

I'm also thinking this could be a cute Halloween Hairstyle that would work with several different costume ideas. Pocahontas, maybe?

Fishtail Braid Pin Back Hairstyle

Fishtail Braid Hairstyle, Taught By ~ The Princess!

fishbone braided bangs hairstyle
This fishtail braid (or fishbone - herringbone braid) "pin back" is a very quick and easy way to keep your bangs out of your face (while adding some style) when you want to leave your hair down. Our 9 yr old Princess came up with this video idea and cute hairstyle all on her own!

I really love how she made the braid loose with the bobby pins exposed for some "bohemian flair!" If you want an even more disheveled looking braid, you could stretch out the outside edge of the strands before pinning the braid back.

As shown in the hairstyle video below, The Princess also came up with a great idea to help start the fishtail braid in an easier way.  She's a very smart girl if I must say so myself!

This braided hairstyle should work great with short hair, medium hair, or long hair.
