How to: the chic ultra low pony

The Rochas spring / summer 2013 collection boasts of a luxurious resort vibe with embroidered pieces in neutral and white. This collection instantly transports us to a summer cocktail party by the beach or on a yacht.

On the runway, the relaxed and glamorous look of the collection was complemented by a 2013 hairstyle that everyone with mid to long hair should try for the summer: the ultra low ponytail. One of the hottest hair trends for the coming year, the low ponytail is a an easy to do hairstyle that can be worn on almost any occasion. This particular look for the Rochas show has a vintage vibe to it, bringing in some Hollywood glamour to your summer vacation – and we’ve got the how-to guide right after the break.

How to: Rochas ultra low ponytail

It’s always good to start any hairstyling process with a good prepping routine. For this look, the hair should be straight and smooth so it’s best to apply an anti-frizz serum on damp hair before doing anything else. For extra protection, you can also use some heat protecting spray.

Dry your hair straight with a blow dryer and a paddle brush.

Create a center part then iron 1 inch sections of your hair to make it poker straight.

Once you’ve made your hair really straight, gather it going to your nape but make sure you leave some strands loose in front to frame your face.

Take an elastic and secure the low ponytail. You can also take a rectangular piece of cloth and use that to tie your hair together, securing it with a bobby pin under your ponytail.

If you want to get this look with the headband, take a rectangular piece of cloth or a bandana and just put it over your forehead. Make it go on top of the loose sections of your hair and then tie it over your low ponytail. If you don’t want to use a headband you can skip this part and go to the next step.

Pull the elastic about 2 – 3 inches downwards to make your low ponytail into an ultra low ponytail.

Ponytails are always a good choice for summer because they’re comfortable and chic. Low ponytails allows you to enjoy the comforts of a traditional ponytail without looking too traditional. Winding 4 Strand Braid With Ribbon

4 Strand Winding Braid With Ribbon
(An Elegant Christmas Hairstyle)
christmas hairstyles
Hey guys, just wanted to share our "Christmas Sunday" hairstyle we did today.  I didn't plan on making a hair tutorial, but this style turned out so lovely, we had to share it!

This hairstyle was created using a basic 4 strand braid called "jewel in the middle" (which you have probably seen before.)  The style is basically a combination of the 2 styles linked below (if you want to recreate it, the videos at these 2 links should help.)

Diagonal Twist Braid With Ribbon

Winding Snake Braid

This is a great hairstyle for Christmas, but of course could also be worn any time.  I'm thinking flower girl, recitals, weddings, dances, etc.

Enjoy, and have a Merry Christmas if we don't see you between now and then!!

5 to try: retro holiday hair how-to videos

They’ll never be as prominent as the more effortless, loose styles; but 1960s hairstyles have still made a big impact on 2013′s hair trends. And the fact that not everyone is willing to put in the effort just means you’ll stand out all the more when you do.

This time focusing on bouffant and beehive styles that are perfect for the holiday season (nothing elevates a little black dress better than a Holly Golightly style bouffant, after all), here’s a round up of 5 sixties inspired hairstyles to try this weekend.

Christmas Hairstyles, Candy Cane Side Ponytail

A Cute Christmas Hairstyle For Girls
Christmas Hair Styles

This video tutorial shows how to make a cute candy cane braid hairstyle (perfect for holiday parties and Christmas.)  I'm loving this holiday hair style because you don't need to know how to french braid or do anything too fancy to create it... and it's quick.

Candy Cane Hair Style

We have had many requests for more hairstyles featuring our darling 2 yr old niece/cousin (The Pea.) She's been MIA for awhile because of a small "incident" involving her hair. (You might notice she has bangs that start quite a ways back on her head now.)  ;)  I asked if any of you had ever experienced a similar incident with your child/toddler on facebook and received an overwhelming response!  It seems that if you get through early childhood with all of your hair intact.... you are in the minority!

Christmas Hairstyles For Toddlers
This style can be done with or without bangs, and on short hair or long hair.  If the hair you are working with isn't quite long enough to reach into a ponytail, you could try making the candy cane and then parting out a small section of hair directly underneath, to add it into (similar to the way we did our heart hairstyle for babies.)

Candy Cane Ribbon Braid
Each time we have done a toddler hairstyle in the past, we always get questions about how we get her to hold still for a hairstyle.  The simple answer is that she doesn't hold still (as demonstrated in our video below.)  ;)  She is a perfectly normal (squirmy) 2 yr old, and we wouldn't have her any other way!

Toddler Christmas hairstyles
Supplies needed:
  • 3 small elastics
  • Ribbon (about 4 feet)
  • Plastic craft needle
  • Topsy tail (optional)
  • Brush or comb

This festive ribbon style would be darling on toddlers, babies, little girls, tweens, and "big girls."  The Princess is planning on wearing this hairstyle Christmas Eve!

5 hair tutorial videos to try this week

Look through the biggest hairstyles for 2013 and you’ll notice a whole variety of low ponytails on the list. That’s because 2013 leans towards all things chic yet effortless, towards that kind of glamour that looks like you didn’t spend forever achieving it.

Nor do you have to, with a hairstyle as simple as the low ponytail. Keeping it interesting, here are 5 video tutorials for creating variations on a low ponytail hairstyle. Watch them after the break.

How to: diagonal low ponytail

What’s different about this hairstyle is its parting. We’re used to seeing center part and side part hairstyles but this diagonal part style is more adventurous making it perfect for women who like to experiment. This spring 2013 hairstyle is very slick with its low ponytail and its shiny finish.

This diagonal low ponytail hairstyle is from Richard Chai Love, styled by Frank Rizzieri and Kevin Ryan for Aveda. The hairstyle created is for the most part very classic and looks like a regular ponytail – but its got a little twist to it in the diagonal parting on top. The style is very simple and very easy to recreate and the assymetrical parting will definitely add a little bit of an edge to your hair. Read on to follow the steps on how you can recreate this look.

diagonal ponytail

How to: diagonal low ponytail

While your hair is still a little bit damp, apply a volumizing spray from roots to tips. At Richard Chai Love Aveda Pure Abundance was used. Next blow dry the hair straight using a high quality brush like a Mason Pearson or equivalent.
After blow drying, use a flat iron and straighten your hair in sections from the nape to the crown.
Create a square on top of the head by parting the hair along the parietal ridge (the point where the top of the head curves downward) on both sides. Secure the hair on top with an elastic.

diagonal part ponytail

With a fine-toothed comb, smooth out the bottom section of the hair and spritz it with a firm hold hairspray to control flyaways. Secure that section into a low ponytail at the base of the head and flat iron the loose ends to get that smooth look at the end. Spritz it with hairspray to hold it in place.
Now onto the top section, remove the elastic band and flat iron it until it is straight. Brush towards the right ear to make a clean parting on the left.
For the assymetrical part, start at the point where the left parting meets the forehead, make another part diagonal across the head, creating two diagonal sections. For shine and hold, put a penny sized dollop of a strong hold gel like Aveda’s Flax Seed Aloe gel on top of the head.
Pull both sections back and secure with the low ponytail at the nape of the neck. Make sure that the diagonal partings you have created will be clearly defined at the end.

Lastly, with a fine toothed comb, flatten the flyaways and spritz a generous coating of a spray-on shine for gloss.

How to: crimped beach waves from Mara Hoffman

Picking a hair accessory can be tricky because you don’t want it to overwhelm your face and you want it to go perfectly well with your outfit. Usually, women choose between flowers, bows, ornate hairpins and hats; but not Mara Hoffman. Her spring / summer 2013 collection was inspired by the word “Aloha”, from the peaceful sentiment of its meaning to the spiriting of the Hawaiian islands it represents. The collection is very beachy so it is not surprising that the hair directly complemented it. This is another side part hairstyle, the side part being a huge hair trend for spring 2013. You can definitely add this “Aloha” hair to your must try list.

Thomas Dunkin for Sebastian Professional was responsible for the textured beach waves hairstyle at Mara Hoffman’s show. The look “illustrates the beauty of mixing and experimenting with different textures and products”. It is very tropical, something your hair would look like after spending time at the beach. What is great about this hairstyle is the use of a real hair accessory like a tropical flower with palm leaves. It’s attached to a hairpin and then pinned onto the hair after it’s done. If you think you can pull off this kind of hair accessory, I encourage you to do so because it looks very organic and earthy. If not, then just settle for an accessory that would best suit your taste. Want to know how you can do this hairstyle on your own? Read more to find out how.

Textured beach waves

How to: crimped beach waves from Mara Hoffman

While your hair is still damp, apply a thickening cream or mousse. Backstage at Mara Hoffman the team used Sebastian Professional Thickefy Foam. Blow dry your hair with a large round brush until it is completely dry and shiny.
Starting from the under layer of the hair working outwards, use a 2 inch micro crimp to crimp small sections of the hair. Starting from the under layer will give volume to your hair which is important in this hairstyle.

crimped beach waves

Gently tease the hair to build more body and texture after crimping it. Spritz your hair with hairspray for a flexible hold. At Mara Hoffman, Sebastian Professional Shaper Fierce Hairspray was used.
With various sizes of curling irons, select random pieces of hair around the head and start curling. This creates different textures all throughout.
For the last step, create a deep side part and side sweep the hair flat across the top of the head. Put on Sebastian Professional Shine Crafter Wax as a finishing touch to create a smooth and sleek look that also holds the hair in place. Attach your choice of hair accessory to finish off the look.
