How to: elegant twisted low ponytail

High ponytails and messy buns have long been the go-to hairstyles for women in a hurry, but it’s the low ponytail that’s the ponytail du jour in 2013. Like its higher incarnation, the low ponytail can of course be there for those moments we’re short on time, but there will always be the occasion where we want to dress it up.

Jenny Packham’s spring 2013 show inspires the perfect way to make the low ponytail an occasion’s hairstyle. Twisted elegantly, it depends on the side part to provide a nice combination of two of spring 2013′s hairstyles.

You can find a full tutorial for the twisted, low ponytail after the break.

The twisted low ponytail.

The lead hair stylist for Jenny Packham’s spring 2013, TRESemmé’s Jeanie Syfu, said that the inspiration for the twisted low ponytail hairstyle was the “women who [partied] beside the Rat Pack in the 1960s in Las Vegas.” That makes it a young and flirty hairstyle for the vivacious girl with now-classic sensibilities. Take away the imagery of the Rat Pack, and you can easily imagine that it’s the kind of hairstyle that Taylor Swift would wear.

Twisted low ponytail: how to.

Apply anti-frizz / climate control mousse generously throughout your hair. According to Jeanie Syfu, this look won’t work if your hair is too slippery and shiny so it’s best to style it one day after washing your hair. This will make it easier to manage and be able to hold in place the updo that you want to recreate.
Blow dry your hair with high heat using a high quality bristle brush, one with boar bristles preferably.
Once your hair is completely dry, create a deep side part on your chosen side (either left or right, pick the side part based upon what best frames your frame). Ensure that the deep side part runs from your forehead to the hairline at the nape of the neck. Gently brush your hair and then spritz with a finishing spray to create a smooth finish.
Push your hair in the opposite direction of the part so that it sweeps across your forehead till just above your opposite ear.

Begin to style the twist using the hair that you just swept across, and by beginning at your ear-line. Twist the section inwards to create a loose twist, securing it with pins as you go. As you twist, gather more hair as you go (similar to how you braid). This gathering trick gives the hairstyle more texture and the end result is a dramatic twist and not just a plain roll.

Pin the twist over your ear.

The twist finishes on the same side of your head that you placed the side part, and it finishes at your nape to achieve the low ponytail styling. To achieve this, brush all your hair back into a low ponytail and secure it with a band.

Spray the ends of your low ponytail with a heat tamer spray, blow dry and the brush the ends to soften the style. If you want your ends to look a little bit messy, tease your ponytail slightly using a brush or a teasing comb.
