Jean Paul Gaultier has always been known to be “out of the box”. For his fall 2014 fashion show, we were brought far into outer space with his Brits in Space themed collection.

It was the very talented Guido Palau of Redken who was given the task to create hairstyles to match Gaultier’s characters. One style he came up with was a super slick top knot. The line between sophistication and punk were blurred for this sculptural look as the traditional knot that women love to wear was given new life. No longer dated, it has now been transformed into a 2014 hairstyle that’s still very easy to do. Read on after the break for the complete tutorial.

How to: Jean Paul Gaultier’s super slick top knot

To really get that slick look, you have to start working on this look with straight hair. You can do this by simply blow drying it straight or you can use a flat hair iron.

Next, apply hair wax or a sculpting hair cream paste like Redken Shape Factor 22 to your hair using your hands and a fine tooth comb. This will give it that clean sculpted look.

Keep applying the sculpting paste, sweeping the hair upwards as you do, until the hair is fully slicked and has a wet-look shine.

Next, gather your hair into a high ponytail. For a clean frizz free look, do this with the help of a fine tooth comb and then secure with an elastic band.

Twist your hair into a top knot (keep in mind that the knot should also look slick and clean). Wrap some hair around the base of the ponytail (elastic) and secure it with pins.

Finish the look by keeping everything in place with a strong hold hairspray like Redken Control Addict 28 and then add more shine to your hair by applying hair oil. Guido used Redken Soft Argan 6 oil all over.

Knots may be a classic go-to hairstyle for women but it need not be boring. With the help of a little product and a little adjustment on the placement of the knot, you now have a modern hairstyle you can wear day of night.
