Mix the concept of a messy up-do with the grunge trend and you’ll end up with something rather different.

As far as spring 2014 hairstyles go, this one seen on the Margiela runway is part up, part down, and wholly grungy. Redken’s Guido Palau was responsible for putting together this rather unconventional look that works for that very reason: it’s unconventionality. How to: Margiela’s grungy up do

This look is best started off with clean dry hair. If your hair is damp you can leave it to dry naturally or you can blow dry it using your fingers as a comb for a natural look.

Create a center part and mist on some lightweight hairspray like Redken Shine Flash 02 Glistening Mist from root to ends. This will give your hair the right amount of shine.

The grunge look of this hairstyle comes from leaving the front section of your hair (about 1 to 1 1/2 inches thick) hanging free. Section the rest of the hair off very roughly: you don’t want neat partings for this style, it should look as if hair has fallen free rather than been sectioned off deliberately.

Pull the back section of hair into a french twist knot at the back of your head. Again, this should be a little haphazard and messy. Secure the twist with pins, letting some strands from the front section of your hair frame your face.

Secure your hairstyle by misting on hairspray. For the Margiela show Redken Control Addict 28 High Control Hairspray was used for a strong hold.

This is not your typical everyday look and that’s the main reason it’s a fun one to try. Wear it with a plain shirt, a dress or even on an evening out. What’s great about this look is that it retains the flexibility of the classic up do while adding an edge.

While the braids and wet-look slicks and quirky up-dos are the ones that stick in our minds after we leave a fashion show, it’s the most effortless of styles that we turn to day to day. And whether your hair is chin-length, waist-length or in-between, there’s nothing quite so simple yet effective than some soft, easy, waves.

As we count the spring 2014 hair trends that stem from both the runways and the streets, we’d be amiss not to mention the number of variations on flowing waves. And while it’s easily argued that such a hairstyle is a mainstay that never really goes out of style, the question then is which variations have captured the eye of the fashion world for the season.

Soft waved hairstyles: what’s in for spring.

While there were plenty of waved hairstyles to draw inspiration from – from ultra-textured and grungy to the perfectly polished Hollywood starlet waves – if we had to narrow the trend for spring 2014 down we could sum it up thus: the trend lies in between. Most of the runway styles didn’t look like they’d just rolled out of bed, nor did they look like they’d taken hours to create. The key for spring / summer 2014 is effortlessness.

Textured soft waves.

Soft yet undone, this variation of the soft waves hairstyle incorporates some of that bed hair tousle and beachy texture. This hairstyle is relaxed yet still flirty, with that little bit of an edge, making it very natural looking and perfect for spring.

At Jonathan Saunders, the hairstyle had the appearance of gentle waves that had dropped out – almost like beach hair that had been slept on, or hair after being kept in a braid for a while and then let down. None too deliberate, opt for this take on days when you want nothing other than effortlessness.

Angelo Marani’s spring hairstyle was a little bit textured but with more defined curl to it. Easy to create using a curling wand or even a straightening iron, leave the top section straight and curl just the mids to ends to get this relaxed waved effect. Leave a little tousle and texture for this variation.

Soft waved hair with a side part.

The deep side part was another standard on the spring 2014 runways, with various styles opting to go side over center. It’s not surprising that the softly waved hairstyles were also spotted on runways coupled with side parts.

Ruffian’s side parted waves had a glamorous, classic look. For more of that old Hollywood feel, the waves should start at or above the brow so they fall over one eye.

Valentin Yudashkin waves were subtle and natural looking. For this look, keep the parting clean and tuck the hair behind one ear to show off some statement earrings.

For an entirely different interpretation, look to Pucci for inspiration. Rather than a clean part, Pucci’s style was more of a flick over to one side, a little bit grungier and messier than other side parted styles.

Polished soft waves.

This type of the soft wave hairstyle requires a little bit more work. This look requires less texture and more smoothness – plus a little extra hair product to add shine. Though still effortless and not ultra-sleek or impeccably waved, this variation is more polished which makes it perfect for night time or a more sophisticated daytime look.

Diane Von Furstenberg’s interpretation took hair away from the face for a look that was a little bit ’70s glamour-inspired. These kind of soft waves have a lightly retro, jet-setting appeal.

A barrel curling wand was used backstage at Krizia to create these soft yet polished waves. This kind of style leans more to the old Hollywood style, still without feeling too fussy.

The low ponytail hairstyle we saw at the Valentino show proves that the obsession with royalty and regal styling will continue – not just as a fall 2013 fashion trend, but beyond into spring 2014.

Simple yet highly elegant, Redken’s Guido Palau created his version of the low ponytail for Valentino’s spring 2014 show. It’s a little austere and polished, crowned with an ornate headband giving it the touch of regality. The hair covering the ears gives it that old-world mood transposed to the present day for a highly wearable spring 2014 hairstyle.

How to: Valentino’s regal low ponytail

Start by prepping your damp hair with a blow-dry spray or heat protecting spray like Redken Satinwear 02 prepping blow-dry spray. Apply it from roots to tip. This helps keep your hair healthy and frizz free.

Next, blow dry your hair with a natural bristle brush until it’s smooth and then create a center part.

Once your hair is dried, backcomb the crown section of your hair for some volume.

Leaving out 1-inch sections in front, gather everything into a low ponytail and secure with an elastic. Then spray on some hairspray to make sure everything is in place. For the Lanvin show, Redken Forceful 23 Super Strength Finishing Spray was used.

Next, put your headband on and then pull the front sections you left behind back over the band and your ears. Wrap the ends of these sections around the hair tie and secure it with pins.

Finish the look off by making sure no strand is out of place. Spray on some hairspray again but be careful not to spray on the headband.

Ponytails can be far from boring, if you just mix them up a little bit. This hairstyle gives us the ease of having a ponytail but at the same times gives off a very elegant look that’s perfect for day or night. Of course you can also mix it up by adding any kind of headband – or even a simple ribbon – that you want.

How to: a braid that has the romance of a Renaissance painting

With strands pulled back loosely from away the face and then woven into a pretty, relaxed braid, this hairstyle has all the romance of a Renaissance painting. That’s no accident: backstage at the Alberta Ferretti spring / summer 2014 show, Redken’s Guido Palau designed it with such a classical look in mind.

Taking the braided hairstyle into softer territory for 2014, it’s none the less a hairstyle that can be worn for fall 2013 with ease.

How to: Alberta Ferretti’s Renaissance-inspired braid

Prepare damp hair by applying a good amount of volumising product from root to tip. Redken Guts 10 Root Targeted Volume Spray foam was used backstage to achieve the texture needed for this hairstyle.

Next, dry your hair with a blow dryer and a diffuser (use your fingers to comb through your hair as your dry it). Diffusers help protect your hair from excess frizz that can come from blow drying.

Once your hair is dried, apply some heat protecting spray like Redken Iron Shape 11 Finishing Thermal Spray. Then create waves around your hairline with a small sized curling iron. This will really give out that romantic feel to the whole hairstyle.

Now it’s time to work on the braid. Start by creating a messy center part and the loosely braid your hair all the way down the back. Remember to lift the front or crown section of your hair for volume.

To add to the relaxed look, pull out a few strands of your hair from the braid and let these strands frame your face. This will also loosen the braid you created.

Finish this look off by holding the style into place with a spritz of hairspray or Redken Wax Blast 10 High Impact Finishing Spray-Wax.

There’s always something about braids that make them a particularly lovely hairstyle, not to mention that they are flexible and generally easy to do. This particular take doesn’t go overboard on the historical references, but with just a few little tweaks on the plain braid, turns it into a very classically inspired look.

How to recreate this adorable tangled braid from Rachel Zoe’s runway

Exotic glamour is what the Rachel Zoe spring / summer 2014 collection is all about. The collection – shown on the runway at New York fashion week – is reminiscent of a woman who loves travelling, and this time she goes on a safari.

Moroccanoil Artistic Director Antonio Corral Calero created the hairstyle for the Rachel Zoe show. The result: this deconstructed, tangled braid hairstyle that’s both glamorous and wild. To try it yourself, follow the steps after the break.

How to: Rachel Zoe’s deconstructed tangled braid

Before anything else you have to keep in mind that this hairstyle works well on hair that’s in great condition. Once you’ve done doing your usual cleansing routine with shampoo and conditioner, apply a hair treatment oil (or any hair treatment product you may have) on your hair. This will make your hair great to work with.

Get some moulding cream (or styling mousse) and work it from the roots to the ends. This will help your hair look healthy and give it just the right amount of shine.

Blow dry your hair from underneath while lifting the roots with your fingers to get the texture this hairstyle needs.

Next, section the upper half of your hair from ear to ear and set it aside with a clip. Take the section under it and create a braid (this is the section that’s left on the nape).

Go back to the upper section of your hair you set aside earlier and then tuck random strands into the braid you made. It should look as if waves have been blended into the braid. Do this to a couple of sections but leave some free so you can go to the next step.

With the sections you left behind, create braids and tuck them into the bigger braid just as your did with the loose strands.

Finish the look off by pulling the baby hair around your hairline out and letting strands frame your face for that textured jet-setter look.

Braids remain to be a huge trend and this hairstyle is a very modern take on the classic hairstyle. With the right products and some patience, you’ll be able to wear this look in the urban jungle.
