How to: Alice + Olivia’s messy crown braids

It must be said that milkmaid braids give off a sweet and innocent vibe. For the Alice + Olivia fall / winter 2013 show, the milkmaid braid was given a messy look to suit a whimsical collection that was a mix of street and romance.

Moroccanoil’s Artistic Director Antonio Corral Calero was the mind behind the messy crown braids that we saw in the Alice + Olivia show. A great balance between classic and modern, this hairstyle is one that you can recreate on your own. All you have to do is follow a few easy steps which you’ll find after the break.

How to: Alice + Olivia’s messy crown braids

Start by prepping your hair by applying some heat protecting spray like Moroccanoil Heat Styling Protection which was used for the show. This will protect your hair from the heat of the blow dryer.
To help you in styling your hair, the next thing you should do is to apply volumizing mousse. Mousse effectively aids in styling and gives hair volume.
Next, dry your hair straight with a blow dryer but make sure you lift the roots of your hair with your fingers to maintain that natural look.
Once your hair is dried, create a center part and then pull your hair back. Make sure you sweep your hair over your ears so that it somewhat covers them and let loose strands fall freely in front of your face. This will help your get that edgy / messy look.
Once your hair is gathered on your nape, divide it into sections and braid each one. Make sure the braids are loose and wide to really get that messy look. Keep the braids close together so they’ll make a nice crown.
After you’ve done the braids, cross them in opposite directions and then bring them up towards the crown of your head until they meet. Make sure the two braids blend and then secure them with a pin.

crown braid how to

Finish this hairstyle by pulling out a few wisps and loosening the braids out some more. This gives out a more natural yet street feel to it. Then secure everything with a list mist of hairspray like Moroccanoil Glimmer Shine Spray.

Leave it to braids to amp up any look and these messy crown braids are the best of both worlds. One part sweet, the other street, you can be sure that you’ll make heads turn when you’re wearing this hairstyle.

The men’s asymmetrical undercut: what it is & how to get it

It was old and then it became new again, quickly evolving into one of the most popular men’s haircuts of last year. We are of course talking about the undercut haircut, the same one that signaled the unexpected revival of the 1920s, particularly in the men’s fashion scene. But as we grew to learn by now, it usually takes a very short amount of time before a hugely popular hairstyle turns mainstream.

If you still haven’t got a chance to try it out on your own, or if you plan on experimenting with the undercut this very summer, the good news is that an even edgier approach to the undercut is currently catching our attention. The asymmetrical undercut offers you the chance to go utterly fresh in your rebellion, that is if you do want to stand out more while making the most out of the 2013 men’s hairstyles and haircuts. This variation of an undercut implies asymmetry through the top area and scissor over comb underneath it.

Before asking your hair dresser or stylist to start cutting your hair, make sure the asymmetrical cut is going to actually work with your hair type and/or with your features. Despite it being amazingly versatile and slick, this cut is not going to chime in with just every guy. On the other hand, if you’re completely sure that this is what you need, get ready for a significant transformation. Read on after the break for the complete how to including step by step directions for cut and style.

How to: men’s asymmetrical undercut

If you’re knowledgable about hair cutting and want to try this cut on yourself or someone else (or if you need instructions to pass onto someone else doing your cutting) check out the video from Toni+Guy as well as the instructions below.

Before proceeding with the actual cut, make sure you wear your hair the right way. In case you’re not certain, you can always ask your stylist to take a look at the hair line in order to point it in the right direction.

First thing you should do is section out a slight asymmetric horse shoe. This should start on the shorter side and dip down on the other side a little bit lower.

After that proceed the block graduation underneath, a process that fast eliminates the length and weight. It is best done at one finger’s depth.

Once you’re done with the block graduation, follow onto the same path and spend a little extra time doing the scissor over comb. This will assure the hair to grow out a lot nicer.

Now is when you can drop the top and by starting at the higher side of the horse shoe, proceed to point cut a square line overdirecting straight to the front area. Work to each previous section, layering a bit more and avoiding the top area to become too asymmetrical.

By separating the hair section in the front, go through it and clean up the fringe. After blowing dry the hair, decide on whether the fringe is too severe, too asymmetrical, or just right.

At this stage, you should deep parallel point cut small sections of hair starting at the back area, in order to dilute weight and add some movement to your cut.

Use parallel channel cutting to also give the cut a little bit of separation.

As a final step, go through your hair and style it out with a little bit of product. If the original undercut haircut required gel for proper styling, get the best results by applying a touch of wax when treating the asymmetrical variation.

How to style the asymmetrical undercut

As we previously established, you will be needing one product only in order to properly style the asymmetrical undercut and that product is the hair wax. Undercuts look particularly attractive when the top hair has a lot of volume and shine. By applying a little bit of wax onto your hands, rub it through the top section of hair moving it around until finding the style that suits you best. This process will assure plenty of versatility, allowing you to play upon the contrast between the short and the longer hair.

Slicking back the hair would be the easiest way to accent the undercut’s rebellious essence and also to stylishly carry the cut all throughout the day. You can also style the fringe into a sleek side part, or go all out by turning your longer section of hair into a modern quiff. For a very casual approach use volumising mousse to naturally tousle your hair.

How to: Diesel’s grungy wet ponytail

Leave it to a brand named Diesel to come up with an exciting collection aptly entitled “Need for Speed”. With a new creative director, Diesel, a brand that we’ve known for years, took on a new direction and a simple way to describe this is fast and modern. Their autumn / winter 2013 collection was very motorbike-chic and to go with this, Redken’s Global Styling Director Guido Palau updated the ponytail by giving it an edge.

Wet look hair is one of 2013′s biggest hair trends and Guido incorporated this trend into the Diesel hairstyle. The result is a grungy wet ponytail that’s easy to do and easy to rock. Check out the steps right after the break.

How to: Diesel’s grungy wet ponytail

Start this hairstyle with slightly damp hair. Then saturate your hair with Redken full frame 07 mousse working section by section and adding most on the crown. This will help you in styling.
Next, rake your hair back with your fingers and secure into a low pony with a hair tie.
Clip the sides of the pony in place and gently pull hair up at the crown so that it dries with a little height.
It’s best to let your hair dry naturally but if you’re pressed for time you can use a blow dryer. Guido used blow dryers given timing at the Diesel show, spraying Redken control addict 28 high control hairspray into the style as he dried it. This will keep your wet look ponytail in place even if you heat it up with the blow dryer.
Finish your hairstyle taking Redken’s control addict 28 high control hairspray again and then spraying it all
over your hairstyle for extra hold. Guido “overused” the hairspray for a laquer-like finish that would stay in place for the duration of the show. This will really give your hair that wet look finish.

A grungy hairstyle like this one is a sure fire way to spice up any look. You don’t really have to go all out biker, you can pair it up with a simple ensemble like a little black dress for a night out. The best part of this hairstyle is it takes a few minutes to do all you need are the right products.

How to: Felder Felder’s easy textured waves

Young, wild and free are feelings that wavy hair invokes. While the latest Felder and Felder collection had a very grown up feel to it, a textured wavy hairstyle was worn by the models to even the seriousness out. The person responsible for this was Johnny Engstrom of L’oreal Prefessionnel.

Many women love the look of wavy hair but find it to be too much work. The look we saw from Felder Felder is one 2013 hairstyle we can easily do at home. Simple yet still gorgeous, it’s a look that any woman can incorporate in her daily life no matter what her outfit and the occasion. Check out the simple steps right after the break.

How to: Felder Felder’s easy textured waves

Before anything else, make sure your hair is completely dried and oil free.

If you think your hair still has oil, apply L’Oreal Professionnel’s tecni art Fresh Dust to get rid of the excess oil. This will ensure that you get the texture and volume needed to pull off this hairstyle.
Now it’s time working on your waves. Take a small section of your hair and spray it with techni art Volume Architect. Then twist the section on your finger and clip it up (the section will look like a tiny bun). Do this over and over again until you’ve twisted all your hair.

Tip: if you want more prominent waves, you can blow dry each twisted section before you pinning them.

To add more texture spray on more Volume Architect all over your hair and then use the blow dry to set the twists.
Take the clips out and once all the sections are down, brush them with your fingers. This will loosen the waves and give them a more natural look.

Styling your hair doesn’t have to be a tedious task and this hairstyle shows us that a little goes a long way. Whether your going to work or going out for a night out, this hairstyle is perfect especially if you want to add some fun into your ensemble.

How to: Bottega Veneta’s cinematic soft curls

Extravagance and luxury are two words that best describe Bottega Veneta’s fall / winter 2013 collection. To go with the collection a hairstyle that was real and irresistible was needed, and the responsibility of creating such a hairstyle fell into the very creative and able hands of Guido Palau, creative director of Redken.

Drawing inspiration from old Hollywood glamour, more specifically the actresses of both the 40s and the 70s, Guido was able to create a 2013 hairstyle with soft curls and a side part that gives off a very cinematic vibe. Luxurious, sexy and elegant, you can have this hairstyle for yourself in a few easy steps. Get the complete how-to right after the break.

How to: Bottega Veneta’s cinematic soft curls

Start by applying Redken’s guts 10 root targeted volumizing spray foam from roots to ends to create volume and a base for styling.
Roughly dry your hair. Once dry, make a deep side part then mist hair all over with Redken iron shape 11 thermal setting mist. This will protect hair from the heat and help the curls hold their shape.
Start curling a section of your hair using a 1/2 inch curling iron but make sure you leave the top 2-3 inches on the crown uncurled. Pin each curl to the head with setting pins as you curl. Do this in all sections of your hair.
When finished curling the whole head, leave to set and then when hair has cooled unpin each curl. Run fingers lightly through curls and then gently brush out with a boar bristle brush for more volume.
Back brush the top front section and then sweep the section across the forehead and secure in place with a bobby pin.

Simple and easy to do yet still very stunning and glamorous, this is a hairstyle that anyone can pull off. You can wear it with pieces that are as gorgeous as the ones in the Bottega Veneta show or you can wear it with a simple ensemble. There’s no way you can go wrong with soft cinematic curls especially if you want to add some more drama in your life.
