How to: super-slick modern ponytail

Every woman’s go-to hairstyle whenever we are having a bad hair day is the ponytail. It is the easiest way to hide your locks that just won’t cooperate whenever you are in a hurry. Although messy and tousled bed hair is certainly a continuing trend, it also seems like the super slick modern ponytail is making its comeback as a 2013 hairstyle.

Once again, Guido Palau, creative consultant of Redken, was in charge of creating a super slick, ultra shiny, stick straight ponytail for the Versus Versace spring 2013 show. It is tightly pulled back with an ultra shiny finish which gives of a little bit of a dominatrix vibe. As Palau mentioned, “it is both sporty and tough, but is also very precise and minimalist”. Want to learn how to do this slick hairstyle? Read on for instructions after the break.

Blow dry your hair straight and apply super strong gel to small sections from the crown downwards. At Versus, Redken hardwear 16 gel was used.
Gather your hair into a tight ponytail right at the crown of your head using a fine tooth comb. Make sure that there are no stray hairs and that it is finely combed.

From the secured ponytail, take a section from underneath to use as a wrap around and hide the elastic. Secure it with a pin after wrapping, preferably pinning underneath the ponytail where it’s least obvious.
To make your hair smoother and shinier, apply a smoothing serum all over your head. Palau used Redken glass 01.
As for the ponytail hanging at your back, flat iron it in sections until it is stick straight. Do not make it too stiff so be careful when ironing it.

To finish off the style, spray a super strength finishing spray from the crown down to the tips of the ponytail for a sleek finish.

This hairstyle goes perfectly well with the blue eyeshadow trend that it was paired with on the runway. The boldness of the eyeshadow compliments the simplicity of the sleek ponytail hair. That said, a natural beauty look also compliments this sleek and shiny ponytail as well.

Valentine's Day Hairstyles "Puffy Heart Bun"

We "big puffy heart" this Valentine's Hairstyle!  ;)

Valentines Day Hairstyle

This heart shape bun hairstyle would be perfect for Valentine's Day, a wedding, flower girl, Prom, Homecoming, etc..... or anytime. We love wearing hearts in our hair!

We were going for a soft, feminine and "Princessy" look with this half up, half down style.

Half Up Hairstyles

You could also turn this heart hair style into a gorgeous updo (using all of your hair) by beginning with a full ponytail instead of a half ponytail. And of course, you can finish this style with or without the ribbon... whatever you prefer.

Her long hair gets tangled quite easily when we leave it down (especially in the wind) so we usually save hairstyles like this for "special occasions."  This is just my opinion, but I think curling the hair seems to help a little bit with the tangling.... as the curled sections seem to stay together for the most part.

Valentines Hairstyle With Curls

Supplies needed to create this look:
  • 2-3 small elastics
  • several bobby pins
  • about 2-3 feet of ribbon (optional)
  • plastic craft needle (optional)
  • curling iron/curling wand/curlers (if you want curls)

Valentine's Hairstyle Video Tutorial:

If you are a subscriber to our blog or Youtube channel, you may recognize the lace braiding technique used to create this bun from our " braid wrapped bun" video, which is one of our favorite updos!

FYI:

We used our "NuMe" brand curling wand to create the curls shown in this tutorial. The plastic craft needle used to sew in the ribbon can be found in most craft stores.

*This style is one of several Valentine's Day hairdos we'll be posting over the next couple of weeks. Keep an eye out!

How to: men’s side slicked hair

More often than not, the laid back look is something that most men prefer but there are certain occasions when a more serious or clean hairstyle is preferred. Refined and slick, this look from the Iceberg fall / winter 2013 runway is one that is suitable for the office, a dinner event or even a date that’s on the more formal side. But that’s not to say you can’t wear it casually as a hairstyle in 2013, either.

Though it may seem like this hairstyle is too time consuming, you can get it in a few easy steps. Thanks to out regular collaborator and hair guru Annika Bowen, we have the how to for this side-slick look right after the break.

How to: men’s side-slick look

To get this look right, you need to start with towel dried or damp hair. Apply salt spray which will give a light pliable hold to the hair, controlling fizz and fight humidity. Annika recommends a product like Tigi Sessions Series Salt Spray.
Using a hair dryer, dry in product and direct hair into position: create a side part then dry the hair to the sides and from the crown dry back down.

Once hair is dried, comb into style again. Take some wet look gel and apply a fair amount on your hair (Annika suggests the amount to be a blob about 1 inch in diameter). Rub the product through your hands first and wipe down on hair. You may have to apply more gel in some sections depending on how thick and how slick you want your hair to be.

You can use any wet look gel for this hairstyle but Annika Suggests Tigi’s Session Series Wet Look Gel. This product is non-flaking and lasts the whole day.

Now it’s time to work on that side-slick. On the side you are slicking it over to, apply gel starting underneath and comb it into place. Continue doing this is several sections of your hair until you have achieved side slick.

If you want a stronger look, make sure your side parting is straight and slick the sides down sharply. If you don’t want to have a definite parting, comb hair forward and then across ever so slightly. For the other sections of your hair like the back and sides make sure your hair is directed down.

As much as this look may seem too made up, let’s face it, there are days when you just want to look all dressed up – and this look is perfect for those days. For the ultimate contrast pair it with your coolest, most casual off-duty outfit, or marry it with a sharp dinner suit for night time.

Milkmaid braids: 5 hair how-to video tutorials

They come and go but never really lose their romance. A braid encircling the head – often known as a milkmaid braid or a crown braid – can ooze folkish innocence and an underlying sensual awareness that not many hairstyles in themselves can muster. We’ve been spotting them recently both on the street around the fashion week circuit, and on the haute couture runways – so as a hairstyle in 2013 you can’t go wrong.

A cute style that can be pulled off by many, there’s one minor problem with milkmaid braids: you either need really long hair, or a very well-matched hair piece. If you do have the hair length to pull it off, then look to a few different variations for inspiration. After the break: 5 video tutorials for milkmaid braids that you can try this week.
