How to: minimalist triple ponytail with duct tape

Duct tape: one of man’s greatest inventions and latest hair accessory? It was Alexander Wang who started it all, turning a simple ponytail into a very futuristic hairstyle by adding a strip of duct tape in the center part. Ingenious? Yes, as genius as those who invented the duct tape. Judging by the effect the duct tape hairstyle had on the runway, it’s not surprising to see another version of it and this time the wonder tape was seen on a minimalist triple ponytail at the Independent Runway show during the L’Oreal Melbourne Fashion Festival.

LMFF Hair Directors and L’Oréal Professionnel Ambassadors Caterina Di Biase and Brad Ngata designed the hairstyle for the show, envisaging a use of black duct tape in a way that’s more wearable and accessible as a 2013 hairstyle than the one at Alexander Wang. The look was described as “new minimalism” and combines the two different textures or wet and dry. As streamlined as this look is, it’s not very hard to do and we’ve got the steps right after the break.

How to: minimalist triple ponytai

The first thing you’ll need to do is to straighten your hair with a hair iron. For this look L’Oreal Professionnel Steam Pod was used to achieve that sleek and straight modern look.
Next step is to create the three ponytails down the center of your head. Because this hairstyle has two different textures, you’ll have to start working on the lower sections first. The first, a small section at the nape, and the second, between the crown and nape.
For the topmost ponytail, the one on the crown, you’ll need to create that wet look. Mix equal parts of Tecni.Art Liss Control, Full Volume Extra mousse and Fix Max gel into a bowl for grip, hold and a sleek wet effect. Apply this starting at the roots with a color brush then comb the whole section into a ponytail just below the crown. Keep combing to get a seamless finish and to spread the product evenly.
For that futuristic look you will need some duct or electrical tape. Cover exposed elastics with tape and add an extra band of tape in between the two elastics to join the ponytails together.

Finish the look by adding extra shine with a healthy dose of Tecni.Art Crystal Gloss in the lengths only.

Today’s modern and fast paced lifestyle requires quick and easy hairstyles. This look is one of those. Easy yet still very chic, it’s a hairstyle for those who want to be unique and edgy.

How to: the fishtail ponytail

Fishtail braids can be surprisingly simple to master, though their beauty is that they give off a look of detailed complexity. On the runway at the L’Oreal Melbourne Fashion Festival, Australian accessory brand Mimco use a hip version of the braid to compliment their very futuristic collection.

The collection was entitled Paradise Battalion and L’Oreal Professionel Hair Director Damien Rinaldo created a perfectly complimentary look: this half-fishtail hairstyle that’s very urban and chic, where the fishtail plait works its way around a ponytail. If you want to recreate this hairstyle for yourself, read on after the break for a complete how-to.

How to: fishtail plaited ponytail

Start working on this hairstyle by prepping damp hair with mousse like Tecni.art Volume Lift mousse by L’Oreal. Apply it from roots to ends. This helps you in styling and protects your hair as well.
Rough dry your hair with a blow dryer.
Now it’s time to section your hair. Start by creating a straight center part and then separate your hair into two horizontal sections (from ear to ear). This creates a top and a bottom layer.
Take some hair gel, like L’Oreal Tecni.art Fix Design Gel, and use it to smooth out the top upper section of your hair. This creates a neat finish by smoothing out just the upper part.
Comine the two sections back together into a low ponytail and secure with a hair tie, leaving a piece of hair free on the side. You’ll need this to conceal the hair tie.
Spray the free piece of hair with L’Oreal Infinium Lumière Ultimate hairspray and wrap around the hair tie to cover. Secure it with a pin underneath the ponytail.

Now it’s time to start creating the fishtail below the tie. To create a nice fishtail plait always remember that you go over then under with each piece of hair. Begin by combing the ponytail together and then dividing it into two sections (left and right much like pigtails). On the right part, take about a half inch section of hair from behind the ear or the rightmost part and then cross it over. Make the strand cross from on top of the right section and then to under the left section (the strand will now be part of the left section). Repeat this on the left section to the right and continue doing it alternately. Think of it as cris-crossing your hair.

Continue until the fishtail braid is about 10cm long and then secure it with an elastic. Use a strand of hair to conceal the elastic just like you did on the other tie.

Finish the hairstyle by brushing the remaining ponytail and then spraying on Tecni. Art Crystal Gloss for extra shine and Infinium Lumière Ultimate hairspray to keep everything in place.

Tip: Spray a towel or cloth with Tecni. Art Volume Lift mousse and run it from the crown down to the first hair tie, following the direction of the hair. This will smooth down any fly-aways and give a seamless finish.

How to: half up textured wet hair

Between a free-flowing look and a regular ponytail sits another great and easy option: the half-up hairstyle. The variation seen on the L’Oreal Paris Runway 03 for L’Oreal Melbourne Fashion Festival (LMFF) was one that breathed new life into the style by way of one of this year’s continuing hair trends, namely wet look hair.

Responsible for the look were LMFF Hair Directors and L’Oreal Professionnel Ambassadors Caterina Di Biase and Brad Ngata. What they created was a half-up, textured wet hairstyle that had a raw street look to it. You could wear this look pretty much anywhere in summer, especially with vibrant prints, edgy denim and an attitude of effortless cool. If you like this 2013 hairstyle, we’ve got the how-to guide for you after the break.

Half-up wet look hair

How to: half-up textured wet hair

This hairstyle is best done once you’ve dried your hair. So, starting with hair dry, drown it with Tecni.Art Full Volume Lift mousse to get that wet look.
Next, mix Tecni.Art Fix Max gel and Tecni.Art Liss Control smoothing serum. Apply the mixture of products across the front, back and sides of the head with a tint brush. This helps you style your hair and makes it look wet.
Take a wide tooth comb and comb all of the hair back off the face. Push the top section of your hair (above the crown) forward to make it rise and pucker. Use pin curl clips to keep everything in place while your hair dries.

Next, pull the side sections of your hair back (creating the half up look) and secure it just below the crown area. Pin this section under the loose hair from the top of your head to keep the pins hidden.

Tip: To get a ‘not too styled’ look, make sure you don’t pull the sides back too tightly.

Now it’s time to dry your hair, take a blow dryer and set it on low speed. Rub you hair on the back of your head between your fingers to break it up so that it does not look completely wet.
Then using a diffuser and still set on low, blast the top of the head and the sides to lock in the texture.

Finish your hairstyle by applying Tecni.Art Fix Design to get that wet look.

This hairstyle is perfect if you want an overall edgier look. It’s a very flexible and you can wear it for day or night, plus it works on both shorter and longer hair. It’s also very easy to do: all you need are the right products and the confidence to boldly create lots of texture.

How to: Jil Sander’s slick, gelled back ponytail

Whenever there are fashion shows, art is not only seen in the clothes but also in the hair and make up of the models. The result is a sleek and modern wet look ponytail that women all over the world can truly appreciate.

Next, blow dry your hair straight for the sleek and straight ponytail.
Now it’s time to work on that wet look. Apply hardwear 16 super strong gel to only the crown of the head, apply it section by section and comb this part straight back without a part. Make sure you don’t pull the comb all the way through the lengths as the ponytail should not have gel.

How to: modern, knotted chignon

A modern recreation of a classic hairstyle is always something worth a try like this modern, knotted chignon by Tigi. Chignons are always a good choice for more formal events but this modern take on it can be worn even on a casual occasion. Perfect for those who want a more laid back yet interesting hairstyle, this look incorporates the trend towards low ponytails and a refreshing knotted effect.

The modern knotted chignon is definitely a 2013 hairstyle that will look good with almost anything. Melbourne hairstylist Annika Bowen happily shared with us how simple it is to recreate this look for yourself. Check out the steps after the break.

modern knotted chignon

How to: modern, knotted chignon

Start off by prepping your hair. For this look Root Boost by Tigi was used to create dry texture, volume and hold throughout the hair.
Create a center part and brush your hair down with a cushion brush into a low ponytail. For that modern, laid back look, don’t tuck your hair behind your ears and don’t worry if it’s a bit messy.
Tease or back comb your ponytail to create texture. Take a small piece of hair and wrap it around the hair elastic to hide it, then fasten with a bobby pin. Spray on some hair spray to keep the texture.
Now it’s time to work on the chignon. Grab the end of the ponytail and fold it back on itself so the ends are at base of hair elastic. Pull out a small section of hair (about an inch) and then wrap it around the folded ponytail. Pin it with a fringe pin or bobby pin.
Slowly pull out another small section and do the same thing, a bit further down the folded ponytail. This will create another wrap around the hair giving it the modern knotted chignon look.

Using your fingers, soften and create more fluff with the 3 knotted sections you have just created.
Finish and secure your hairstyle with Tigi session series hairspray.

While some may think that chignons are boring, this modern knotted version is far from that. New and hip, this hairstyle will make heads turn no matter where you wear it and what you wear with it.
