"Magnet Braids" & Half Up Hairstyles Tutorial

These cool braids which we are calling  "magnet braids" are cute, super easy, and fun to make!

magnet braids

Hope you enjoy our hairstyle tutorial this week. We love that this braid is quick and simple, but looks quite intricate and unique. I actually came upon this little trick by accident one day as I was making another hairstyle.  Bonus!  This "braid" requires no braiding skills at all..... just twisting!

magnet braids half up hairstyle

Many cute hairstyles can be made using this technique, including the 3 half up hair style ideas shown in our video tutorial below.  This styles shown in our video will work best on medium to long hair.  But, if your hair is on the shorter side, there are options for using this braid in other ways.  We were able to make a single magnet braid hanging on the side in my niece's hair recently (which is only about shoulder length.) A little tip: Depending on the style you are doing, this braid will hold together better if you start with an elastic at the top.

Please enjoy our braiding tutorial below, featuring 3 cute hairstyle ideas :
( Twists in the back, a twisty knot, bringing the 2 braids on the sides together in the back.)

One more idea.... The Princess wore this twisted ponytail hairstyle to school the other day, and I actually remembered to take a picture!  This style was started the same way as shown in our video above.  After combining the 2 braids on the sides into one braid in the back, I made 2 more magnet braids with the remaining hair (one on each side of the middle braid) and braided the 3 braids together.  Quick and simple!

How to: simple, sleek ponytail at Parkchoonmoo

The ponytail is a favorite hairstyle all over the world and for this year, one of the key variations is the low ponytail. The low ponytail was spotted in many shows and we saw different versions of this 2013 hair trend: from simple to textured, we can’t help but love the effortless mood they convey.

For the Parkchoonmoo show at New York Fashion Week, Tigi Stylist Nick Irwin created a simple and sleek ponytail that went well with a collection of modern, yet still very feminine silhouettes. With the help of our hair consultant and Melbourne hairstylist, Annika Bowen, we give you the how to for this look. Check out the steps after the break.

How to: simple, sleek ponytail at Parkchoonmoo

To get this look Catwalk by Tigi Sleek Mystique was used.

Start off by prepping hair with Tigi Fast Fixx Style Prep.
Starting in the center create a middle part going all the way down to the nape of the neck. You should now have two main sections.
Starting at the nape take horizontal partings from each two sections. Use flat irons to straighten these sections and then spray each section with Tigi’s Look Lock hairspray to keep your hair straight. Continue doing this in all sections of your hair.

Once all the hair has been straightened, take a soft bristle brush and brush all hair down towards center nape. Keep brushing until you have achieved your desired sleek look.
Fasten ponytail with an elastic and brush it down. To maintain the sleek look, spray on some more hairspray.

How to: beachy wet look curls

Though we’ve known and seen it for a few years, wet look hairstyles are still making a splash. As part of 2013′s hair trends, this look is given a new twist in different ways and one most notable take was recently spotted in the Mara Hoffman show at New York fashion week.

This curled, wet look hairstyle with center part was created by Nick Irwin of Tigi and used the collection itself as the inspiration behind the look. Slick yet still very bohemian, the hairstyle worked really well with a collection of long printed dresses. We consulted Melbourne hairstylist Annika Bowen on how to recreate this gorgeous hairstyle. Check out the steps right after the break.

How to: curled, wet look hairstyle with center part

Prep hair with mousse. Annika recommends Tigi’s Curlesque Strong Mousse. Don’t use product too sparingly because you want to create a foundation for this wet look style.

Comb and blow dry hair down the sides and back creating a center part in the process. You can clip your hair in the section behind your ears to keep tension but make sure you leave the length loose for curling.

wet look curls

Now it’s time to start creating the curls. Start by taking small sections of your hair (about 1-2 centimeters thick) then apply more mousse from mid lengths to ends. This will add extra hold for the curls.
Take some Tigi Session Series Wet Look Gel, apply into your hands and start twisting section. Use pin curl clips to set twists in place. Continue doing this in all sections of your hair.

Let your hair dry for a little bit and remove pin curl clips. Apply Tigi’s Your Highness Weightless shine spray to add more shine or wet look to your hairstyle.
If you want an extra something you can accessorize this hairstyle with an ear cuff chain just like what was done for the Mara Hoffman runway show.

The wet look doesn’t have to be always one in the same as proven by this hairstyle. You can wear this day or night especially when you want to exude that modern hippie vibe.

Criss Cross Waterfall Twist Braids

A beautiful "X braid" (or criss cross braid) using the waterfall twist!

criss cross waterfall twist hairstyle

We absolutely love the ever popular waterfall braid / fairytale braid / fall through braid and the waterfall twist braid is probably our favorite variation, as it is so easy! Watch our original video tutorial showing how to make this simple braid here:  waterfall twist braid video. Many creative hairstyles can be made using this braid (we actually have a few filmed that we hope to post soon) so keep an eye out for those if you love this as much as we do!
X Braid

In this particular hairstyle, we used two diagonal twists to form a braided X at the back of her head. I love that the braids are quite subtle, not really disturbing the hair underneath.  It almost looks as if the braids are just floating there!

This is a great hairstyle for teens. But if you have a little girl, you might be thinking that this style would never hold up at school or play!  Watch our video below for another option that will hopefully stay together better for you if you have an active child.

waterfall x braid

This is one of those styles that will work best with long (straight) hair.  But, if your hair is a little shorter, you could get creative and modify the style to fit your length.  For example: you could part your hair on the side and make a miniature X on one side of your head (up by the part.) We've been getting a lot of requests for styles for short hair and for different hair textures.  The thing is.... this is the hair I have to work with. ;)  The Princess's hair is naturally straight, and long.... it is what it is. Most styles can be modified to work with whatever hair type you have, although some styles (like this one) will obviously be better suited for certain types of hair.

The princess and I are loving the unique and bohemian look of this hairstyle.  We hope you do too!

How to: Loewe’s low knotted chignon

Subtle and sleek, the chignon is one of the more elegant of 2013′s hairstyles.

This particular interpretation – a low knotted Spanish chignon – was the signature hairstyle created by Guido Palau for Loewe’s spring 2013 show. The hairstyle reflected the modern and sleek collection that was inspired by Spain. In this hairstyle, the hair is parted right in the middle and is pulled over the ears to give the look more character.

It is probably one of the easiest hairstyle up do’s that you can do on your own if you are in a hurry or if you want a simple hairstyle that looks very chic and beautiful. Read more to learn about the steps on how to do it yourself.

How to: Loewe’s low Spanish chignon

Apply Redken’s full effect 07 from roots to tips on damp hair and blow dry it until it is straight.
With a comb, part your hair right in the middle. Make sure it is a straight, clean parting.
Apply a shine serum from the top section of the hair until the ends of it. The Redken team at Loewe used glass 01 serum.
Using a paddle brush, pull hair back into a low, smooth, clean ponytail. Cover the tops of the ears with some hair to get the full effect of the Loewe Spanish-inspired hairstyle.

Tightly twist the ponytail up to form a low bun. Secure it with pins once it is tight and smooth.

Tame any fly-aways and keep the chignon in place by freely spraying on hairspray. Guido and team used Redken’s forceful 23 for a very firm hold and added shine.

Pair your freshly slicked low Spanish chignon with some elegant yet edgy leather pieces to really channel the runway look.
