How to: the textured side part for autumn

As the warm summer breeze rapidly morphs into autumn’s crisp air in the northern hemisphere, the side part hairstyle gets a subtle makeover, as to better complement the feel of the new season. Marking one of the most distinguished fall 2013 hair trends, the deep side part forgets all about the sleek, focusing on texture from the crown and polished ends instead.

Fearless but effortless-looking, slightly undone and leaving just enough place for interpretation, the textured side part look is perfect for both a day spent running errands around town, and for a fabulous night out.

Backstage at Tracy Reese Fall 2013, TRESemmé Stylist Jeanie Syfu took inspiration from “a fearless New York girl” in order to complement the sexy silhouettes and rich textures featured in the collection.

Read on after the break for details on how to create this side-swept textured hairstyle.

Textured side part fall 2013

Begin by applying a volumizing mousse and a heat tamer spray throughout the roots and lengths of the lightly dampen hair. These will work in creating both texture and volume.
With your hair upside-down, proceed in rough drying it with your fingers until the hair is 90% dry. As you continue drying upside-down, use a brush to lift the roots making sure not to smooth them, as this will result in the flattening of the texture.

Once your hair is dry, flip your hair over and begin creating a “front sweep” by lightly brushing the hair from the front of the crown over to one side diagonally.
By randomly pinning a mix of black bobby pins at the temple, proceed with securing the the side-sweep in place.

If you care for more volume at the top, tease the crown of the head for lift and apply a finishing spray. Jeany Syfu used the TRESemmé 24 Hour Body Finishing Spray.
Finish off the look by applying a dry shampoo for extra texture. For an undone, softer result, pull out pieces of your hair.

How to Prada’s youthful side part hairstyle

Simple goes a long way in this hairstyle we saw on the Prada spring / summer 2014 show at Milan Fashion Week. The modern youthful glow is one that anyone can easily pull off.

Guido Palau created this hairstyle which – despite being simple and straight to the point – still looks stunning. He describes this hairstyle as “true Prada hair, in that the style is a bit school girlish, yet the overall look is quite strong”. Who would’ve thought a deep side part could add that a certain X factor to an otherwise plain look? Check out the complete and very easy how to for this 2013 hairstyle right after the break.

This hairstyle is best done on washed hair. Wash your hair with shampoo and conditioner like Redken’s Color Extend shampoo and conditioner. This will serve as your blank canvas.
Towel dry your hair until it’s damp and apply volumizing spray or mousse all over it. For the Prada show, Redken Guts 10 Root Targeted Volume Spray Foam was used.

Next, take a blow dryer and roughly dry your hair for a natural look. You can use your fingers to comb your hair as your dry it.

Once your hair is dried, create a deep side part using your fingers.
Finish this hairstyle off by tucking your hair behind your ears. This gives it that strong yet youthful feel. To keep it tucked, secure these sections with pins.

More often than not there is truth to the saying less is more. One more reasons why we love this hairstyle? You can wear it anytime, anywhere and for that extra sweet look try topping it off with a headband.

Prep you hair by applying some blow dry lotion. This will protect your hair from the heat and will help you get a silky straight look. For the show, Redken Satinwear 02 prepping blow-dry lotion was used.
Next, blow dry your hair straight. To achieve the best results, do it section by section.
Once you’ve blow dried your hair, apply anti frizz serum like Redken Diamond Oil Shatterproof Shine from root to tips to get rid of unwanted frizz.

Create movement on your hair by using a large barrel curling iron. Lightly bend your hair in large sections starting from the mid lengths. Keep the top of your hair straight for that weighed down look.
Finish this hairstyle by applying a dry shampoo product starting on the mid lengths of your hair to the ends or where you curled. For best results use Redken Powder Refresh 01. This will absorb excess oil and create movement at the ends of your hair.

How to: Diesel Black Gold’s sporty french braid

Hairstyles come and go, but braids are rarely far off the radar. Variations on the braid made their way into the list of 2013 hairstyles, with the spring 2014 shows carrying on the trend.

The longevity of the braid can be attributed to the fact that it’s very accessible to women all over the world. Its flexibility gives us room to be creative and it can be worn for almost any occasion. In Diesel Black Gold’s spring / summer 2014 show, the classic french braid was given a more chic and urban look by Redken’s Guido Palau. Chic yet feminine, the braid seen on the show was a mix of sleek with a beach-like feel.

Recreating this urban french braid doesn’t require much effort. Check out the very easy steps right after the break.

To get the beach-like feel of this look, you’ll have to work with damp hair. Apply some anti-frizz product on it like Redken’s Outshine 01 anti-frizz polishing milk to help you in styling your hair.
Starting at the crown of your head (the very top part) take a about a 1-inch to 1 1/2-inch section of hair and divide it into three parts. Start french braiding your hair with these 3 sections. To get the messy look, slightly twist the partitions of your hair as you braid.

How to style mid-length curly hair for men

Curly hair on men can be tricky to work with – especially when it’s got some length to it. It’s tempting to go just back to shorter hair. Before you go for that “chopping off” option, it’s worth reconsidering – seeing your natural waves as an opportunity for you to think out of the box and have fun with styling.

To help you tame your mid-length curls into a model-esque ‘do, we got some tips from hair guru Annika Bowen. This Melbourne-based hairstylist has worked with men’s hair of many different lengths and textures, and she happily shared with us some steps on how to style curls for men. These steps are based off the look spotted on the Hermes spring 2014 men’s runway show, which featured several models with chin-length curls.

Follow the steps after the break to replicate this look, noting that these are aimed at men with naturally curly or wavy hair.

How to style mid-length curly hair for men

Starting with wet hair, use a curl cream like Label.M Curl Cream or Tigi Curl Rocks to define your curls. Rub about 1-2 pumps on both hands and apply to hair using a scrunching technique.

Note: You can also twist small sections throughout your whole head to help define your curls more. You can also use big clamp clips to hold scrunched sections in place while letting hair dry.

Next, you can either let hair dry naturally or diffuse with hairdryer.
Create texture on your hair by spraying either sea salt spray (both Label.M and Tigi have one) or Label.M curl spray. Again, you can let your hair dry naturally or use a diffuser.

Mid length and curly hairstyle for men

This step is very important but can be a bit scary for guys (feel free to ask for help from a lady). Once your hair has dried, use a curling iron and curl random sections of your hair. To do this, you’ll have to wrap your hair around the curling iron and hold it for about 5-10 seconds then release. This creates clean and defined curls, especially if your hair is only wavy and not naturally tightly curled.
Take some wax of your choice (matt wax/paste with a bit of hold works best – Annika recommends Label.M matte paste or Tigi B For Men matte separation wax) then apply a small amount into the palm of your hands. Rub your hands together and then scrunch the product into the mid lengths and ends of your hair to style it into your desired shape. On the Hermes runway, a side part was used though you can place the part wherever works best with your face shape.

Working with moderately long and curly hair may mean you’ll have to put some extra work into styling it but once you’ve seen the results, you’ll know that the hard work or effort you’ve put into it is worth it. Extra work simply means extra heads will turn as you walk down the street.

How to: the slick futuristic ponytail

Inspiration comes in many different forms. For Nanette Lepore’s fall 2013 show, a trip to mars was all the inspiration needed to create a gorgeous hair and beauty look, after all, a little sci-fi goes a long way.

John Pecis of Bumble and Bumble took note of the wet look hair trend of this year and incorporated it into a ponytail, the result is this hairstyle that is fit for the modern woman who is ready to conquer the universe. This modern up-do is a 2013 hairstyle that you can easily recreate and we’ve got the steps right after the break.

To really get the slick look, blow dry damp hair straight. If you have wavy hair you can use a hair iron to create that slicker / straighter look.
Next, you’ll need to divide your hair into three sections. The first is on the top of your head. Start at the temples and then work your way towards the nape. This section is somewhat like a mohawk shape. The two other sections would be on the sides of your head.

Nanette Lapore slick ponytail

Take some hair gel and apply it on the top / mohawk section you made. Comb it towards the back of your head and then slick the side sections of your hair with gel as well.
Join the three sections into a low ponytail but remember to keep the partings clean and sharp.

The last and final step would be securing the hairstyle with some hairspray. This will keep everything in place and will give your hair the extra shine needed to pull off the modern look.

While this hairstyle is inspired by a trip to another planet, it’s safe to say that it remains very down to earth. The addition of just a sharp parting and some gel turns a simple ponytail into a super-modern and unique one.
