How to get Justin Timberlake’s “Suit and Tie” hairstyle

The boy band craze of the nineties not only brought so much joy to a lot of female fans but it also brought about amazing talent. One of these talented artists is Justin Timberlake. The transition between a boy band member to a solo artist is not an easy one but he has done it seamlessly.

Over the years, as he gave us hit after hit, started his own record label, his own clothing line and ventured into acting, Mr. Timberlake has constantly updated his look. Though his presence never waned, it’s been a while since got a new song from him. With his comeback with the single “Suit and Tie” and his new album “The 20/20 Experience, he debuts a new hairstyle, one that’s more mature than the curly hair he had during his N’Sync days. You can have JT’s charm and appeal too – or at the very least his 2013 hairstyle – in a few easy steps. Check out the how to for his “Suit and Tie” hairstyle right after the break.

How to: Justin Timberlake’s “Suit and Tie” hairstyle

The most important thing you have to do to get this look is to cut your hair like of very similar to JT’s. His haircut is buzzed or really short on the sides (about 1-2 inches above the ears) and is 2-3 inches long on top or the crown area. The top part should be layered to give the look of texture. Your stylist can easily do this cut for you.
Next, start styling your hair. On damp or towel dried hair, apply on some mousse or liquid-to-foam volumizer (for example, Aveda Phomollient styling foam or Redken guts 10). Put the product on your palms, rub your hands together and work it all over your hair from roots to tip. Pay attention to the top part where the hair is long. This helps you style your hair and get the right amount of volume.
Take your blow drier and dry your hair using a comb. Alternately dry the top your hair going to the center and then backwards. The sides should be combed downwards as you go through it with the blow dryer.

Make your JT hairstyle hold by taking a pea sized amount of styling clay or wax. The exact product will depend on your hair and it may take some experimenting, but we would suggest a product like Layrite Pomade (which holds like a wax – note that if you have naturally curly hair you should opt for the ‘Super Hold’ version for extra strength), Tigi Bedhead for Men Matte Separation Wax, or Aveda Grooming Clay.

Rub it into your hands and run it over the front part of your hair going backwards. Do this gently, keeping in mind that it shouldn’t be flattened.

Lastly, take your comb and clean up the side parts (this hairstyle should have two, one on the left and one of the right). Comb the side of your hair down then the center section upward.

Next time you wear a suit and tie, you might want to use this hairstyle with it. It’s fun yet still sophisticated, a good mix of mature and playful: much like Justin Timberlake himself. This hairstyle is perfect for a man on the go and ready to conquer the world.

How to: a modern take on the men’s pompadour

Vintage inspirations have been particularly strong for 2013′s hair trends, for both men and women. The pompadour of the ’50s and ’60s – the hairstyle made famous by the King of Rock n’ Roll, Elvis Presley – is one of those that’s cropped up again, giving men a tough yet slick vintage vibe that’s relatively easy to create.

American Crew hair stylist Dean Tsopanis says he’s noticed an increase in men asking for the cut and style in recent months. In the steps below, he explains how to get a modern take on the once-again coveted look.

In this modern version the hair has a slight side part rather than being slicked entirely back. Keeping it a bit shorter and a little bit more effortless creates a pompadour that’s cool without being too time-warped.

How to: modern men’s pompadour hairstyle

Wash the hair with your favourite shampoo and conditioner. If your hair is fine, you may want to use a volumising shampoo (Dean Tsopanis recommends American Crew Thickening Shampoo).
Dry the hair and apply American Crew Boost Cream, running your fingers through the hair and working into the side part of your choice.
To add texture, movement and height, follow by applying a small amount of American Crew Forming Cream and work through areas where you want texture and volume.
Finish off with a light mist of American Crew Boost Powder.

Voilà – Elvis is back, only ready to face the modern day.

What’s great about this look is that despite the vintage or classic inspiration, it remains modern and not dated. This hairstyle is perfect to spice up any outfit casual or formal.

How to get the slicked-back hairstyle as seen at Roberto Cavalli

With the rise of the wet look hairstyle as a 2013 hair trend, it is only fitting that so many variations of it have shown up in different runway shows. It’s the task of people like Redken’s Guido Palau to take an existing hairstyle to the next level and this is what he did for the Roberto Cavalli fall 2013 show.

Guido Palau describes this hairstyle as a “wet, shiny look that is tough and boyish”. With the hair slicked back into something like a low ponytail, only unsecured, it can be said that it’s a modern hairstyle that’s fitting for the collection itself. Follow the steps after the break to recreate it.

How to get Zambesi’s manga-inspired mens hairstyle

Leave it to a Japanese manga inspired hairstyle to leave a lasting impressions. Zambesi was one of the many brands who showcase their latest collection at Australian Fashion Week and as the clothes caught attention so did the hairstyles.

Slicked, quirky and modern describe the men’s hairstyle that Redken Hair Director Richard Kavanagh created for the Zambesi spring 2013 show. It’s a look that despite being really polished remains utilitarian: like the slick central character of a graphic novel. This 2013 hairstyle is a good mix of elegant and hip making it an ideal look for those who are on the adventurous side. Read on after the break to get the complete how to.

How to: Zambesi’s manga-inspired mens hairstyle

Start by washing your hair with Redken Clean Brew extra cleansing shampoo for a fresh feel and dry the hair so it’s mostly dry using a hair dryer.
Create a deep, low side part and brush a small amount of Redken For Men Stand Tough extreme gel through both sides of the part, adding more if necessary.

Next, sweep hair firmly across the top of the head at the front from the pa rt to create a cowlick-type look at the front – leave this side slightly disheveled by tousling with finger tips to create the wave. Brush the other side down slick to the head.
On a low setting, slightly blow dry the hair on each side of the part, keeping the heat blowing in the same direction of the hair.
Finish with Redken Control Addict 28 extra-high hold hairspray for hold and shine.

While experimenting with hairstyles can seem terrifying, it’s always a good idea to try something new. You might be surprised on how a change in hairstyle can change your look.

How to create a chic yet dishevelled knotted low ponytail

Trends always serve as a guide for hairstylist to create new styles and this year two of the biggest hair trends are the low ponytail and the wet look. Simple yet chic, these hairstyles has always been a favorite of women all over the world. Sophie Roberts of ghd made use of these 2013 hairstyle trends and gave them yet another new twist for the Alice McCall show at Australian Fashion Week (MBFWA): what resulted was a messy, knotted low ponytail.

For her latest spring / summer collection, Alice McCall took us on an underwater journey. Drawing inspiration from German botanist illustrator Ernst Haekel and the intricate detail of Art Nouveau jewellery, the collection featured beautiful cut-out lace pieces, Japanese organza and custom-prints. Sophie Roberts took inspiration from the collection itself and describes the knotted low ponytail as how a girl would look after she has gone swimming in the ocean. Lucky for us, we don’t have to head to the beach to get this look: we’ve got the how to right after the break.

How to: knotted low ponytail

Prep your hair by evenly distributing a mixture of ghd total volume foam and ghd smooth & finish serum to the hair, starting from the roots and working down towards the ends. This will help you style your hair with ease.
Comb hair using a ghd detangling comb into a rough side part that sweeps over the forehead.
Next, lightly ‘scrunch dry’ hair. Backstage at Alice McCall, hair was scrunched with the hands while being blown dry with the ghd air.
Gather hair into a low slung ponytail at the back of the head and secure with an elastic, allowing it to blouse out at the nape of the neck.

Separate the ponytail into small sections and create waves in each section using a styler like the ghd eclipse. Spray with ghd final fix hairspray for added hold and texture.
Create random knots and twists at the end of the ponytail, securing with a fine silicon elastic.
Gently pull hair away from the elastic at the hairline to encourage fly-aways for a slightly dishevelled finish.

Finish with ghd final shine spray for extra shine.

This hairstyle is a quick and easy way to keep your summer interesting. Whether you’re going out for some fun in the sun or a night out, this knotted low ponytail will surely add extra glam to your outfit without looking too uptight.
