Texture is a word that is now very commonly heard in fashion. When it comes to 2013′s hairstyles, textured looks are making heads turn whether it’s a wet look hairstyle or a dry, matte one. As much a we all love the sleek and simple look, textured hairstyles give out a more relaxed and bohemian vibe that encourages us to just be a little more carefree than usual.

For the Costello Tagliapietra spring / summer 2013 show, a matte textured hairstyle was created by celebrity stylist Nelson Vercher. This hairstyle paid homage to the 18th century hairstyles found in paintings and other art works of the time. The key to this look: using different ways to give texture to the hair. Check out the steps on how you can get this look for yourself right after the break.

How to: matte textured hairstyle

The first thing you have to do is to prep your hair by protecting it. To do this you can use heat protecting or thermal spring water spray just like what is used to create this look for the Costello Tagliapietra show. On damp hair, apply the product starting on the crown and then the rest of your hair layer by layer.

To start creating volume, put on a good amount of styling mousse all over damp hair. Use your fingers to spread the mousse evenly from root to tip. Aside from creating volume, this also makes the hairstyle hold.

To prevent your hair from being too stiff with volume, spray on some volumizing conditioner one section at a time for even distribution. No need to rinse your hair.

With a blow dryer, use your hands to rough dry your hair. Make sure you lifts the roots to create volume. You also have to completely dry your hair to get that matte finish.

Once your hair is completely dry, enhance volume some more by spraying on dry shampoo on the roots of your hair. The best way to do this is to start from the back and then work your way to the crown of your hair.

Fix the front part of your hair by blow drying it using a round brush.

To create another type of texture, take a large-barrel curling iron and loosely curl random sections of your hair. This look is more wavy rather than curly so focus on creating random waves.

Spray on some more dry shampoo, this time, there is no need to do it section by section. This will add a more matte effect to your hairstyle and keeps the texture.

The next step is to create a bun with your hair by simply twisting it and securing it with pins. You can opt to have two or even three buns in different sections depending on the thickness of your hair and the amount of texture you want. Let the buns stay for some time (ideally while you put on your make up).

Once you’re ready to step out, release your hair out of the bun and use your fingers to comb through it to loosen it up.

Finish the this hairstyle up by spraying on some more dry shampoo to keep the texture and then securing everything with some hairspray.

It really doesn’t matter what event or where you’re going, this hairstyle is perfect for almost anything. This is a good hairstyle to try especially if you’re finding sleek and straight too common and want something a little more daring.

The shoulder length bob: a mid-length alternative

We’ve seen a number of top models in recent moths chopping of their hair and stepping out with chin-length bob hairstyles, prompting us to agree that the bob should sit amoung the list of covetable 2013 hair trends. Of course, that’s not to say a bob is for everyone. Far from.

If you do want to brave a bob for the first time, or return to one this year, do consider that there are a few options in terms of length. One such option is a long bob, or shoulder-length bob.

By definition a bob is short and relatively blunt, but as for the exact length – that’s open to interpretation. If you’re not game to go for an ultra-short flapper style bob, or even a chin-length one, then here’s another option for 2013: the shoulder length bob.

Taking the style of the bob but adding some extra length, a shoulder-length cut with blunt edges gives off a bob vibe without taking off too much length.

But how to style it?

Any kind of bob is a statement in and of itself: crisp, clean, sophisticated… So even without the addition of any extras – like bangs – you can have a beautiful style that sits well when worn out.

If the hair sits just longer than the shoulders, one great style is to let it flick up a little at the ends. A bit of body and bounce, and you’ve got a hint of retro flair seeping into your look. A perfect example is style blogger Doina Ciobanu, who recently swapped to a shoulder-length bob that sits beautifully when side-swept and curled up gently at the ends. To get this kind of perfect styling you can use either a round brush and blowdryer, or some hot rollers.

Of course, if your hair is naturally curly there’s more work involved in achieving this style so be prepared to do some blow-drying and/or straightening, or to rock some messy waves.

Long bob with bangs

You may have noticed plenty of models and celebrities are again returning to hairstyles with bangs. A fringe / bangs is one great way of keeping a mid-length hairstyle interesting. It could be a more wispy style (like Anja Rubik’s, below), or even better, a set of thick, blunt bangs to match with your blunt-cut shoulder-length bob.

Gymnastics Hairstyles, Twist Link Ponytail

A Hairstyle For Gymnastics, Sports, Dance, Figure Skating, Cheer leading, Swimming, etc.

This fun "elastic hairstyle" is great for holding your hair back for gymnastics and other sports. We love it because it's quick and easy! You could finish this style with a ponytail, bun, pigtails, or by leaving the rest of the hair down.

This cute hairstyle is actually a simplified variation of one of the very first styles we ever posted on our blog (back in 2008) which can be found here:  Twists to the side hairstyle. 

Of course, this style doesn't have to be just for gymnastics, it could also be a darling every day look. This hairstyle is perfect for toddlers and babies with fine (thin) hair or short hair and seems to hold up quite well on a busy toddler.  ;)

Our little Pea has bangs (or fringe) but if you don't, you could incorporate the hair in the bangs area into the elastics in the front.

How to: wet look French twist

It’s no secret that wet look hair has made a huge come back in the runways and as such features prominently amoungst the list of 2013 hairstyles. The appeal can be attributed to it’s relaxed, laid back feel while at the same time, maintaining some edginess. It’s one of those looks that you can easily incorporate into your everyday outfit without looking over the top.

A variation of the wet look was also seen in the Nina Ricci spring / summer 2013 show at Paris fashion week. A wet look with a twist – literally – it’s perfect not just for the runway but for everyday. Created by Redken creative consultant Guido Palau, this wet look was made to be worn by any woman and it can be easily recreated. Check out the steps right after the break.

How to: wet look hair with a twist

Prep damp hair by putting on some mousse to create volume. Work it from the ends to the roots using your fingers and then comb it through using a natural brush.

Next, dry your hair using a blow dryer and a diffuser. Use your fingers to lift your hair on the roots as you dry your hair to prevent it from flattening out.

Now it’s time to create that twist. From the nape, gather your hair and twist it going upwards. Tuck the ends under the twist you created – you can use an end of a tail comb for this – and then secure with bobby pins.

To create an edgier look, pull a few bits of hair going down to your nape carefully. Make sure you don’t make the hairstyle lose its shape by doing this.

Secure the hairstyle with hairspray.

To get that glossy, wet finish, spray on a good amount of glistening mist to your hair. For this look, Redken’s Shine Flash 02 was used.

There you have it – a wet look hairstyle that’s meant to be worn out on the streets. This look is perfect to wear for cocktail parties or whenever you feel like giving yourself an edgier look. It will surely make heads turn and pump up any ensemble.

Textured long hair for men: how to style it

No longer tied up in associations of grunge gods or surfer dudes, long hair has found a new place amoungst the fashionable male population. Long haired men have been spotted on runways, in campaigns, in editorials; their look deliberately bedraggled and accompanied by facial hair, or neatened up, slicked back atop a clean-shaven face. Either way, long hair has a versatility for men that goes beyond stereotypes.

One way of styling long hair for men is to give it texture that’s messy without being overly grunged-out. Much like the style created by Todd Arndt, Hair Director at Redken for Men, for the Pistols At Dawn spring 2013 campaign (pictured). Wear it with your coolest casual outfit or sharpest suit; as a 2013 hairstyle textured long hair for men offers us plenty of options.

Textured long hair for men: how to get it

You can do this style on freshly washed hair, or unwashed hair – either will work. It will hold better in hair that hasn’t been washed for a day or two. You can use a dry shampoo at the roots to refresh unwashed hair.

If you have fine hair, apply a texturising or volumising product into damp hair after you wash it but before you dry it. You’ll want a product that’s light – not too thick or sticky – at this step (see suggestions below).

If your hair very curly to begin with, you’ll need to blow dry or straighten it to be roughly straight, keeping in some loose wave as the foundation of your texture.

If your hair is dead straight, you might want to create a bit of wave first in order to really get that messy texture. To do this you can use a hair straightener (divide hair into sections and run the straightener down each section at a 45 degree angle to make a curl: this will take a bit of practice or you may need to youtube it to see it in action) or a barrel hair curler. Go ahead and borrow one from your girlfriend, we won’t tell.

Alternatively you can twist sections of hair while it’s slightly damp and clip/tie the twisted sections back until they’re dry. Spray on some root boosting product to really set the hair (see product suggestions below). You could also tie it into a messy bun and leave it overnight while you sleep. When you let your hair down, you should have a bit of a loose wave.

Once you have some rough waves going on in your hair, comb it through with your fingers to give it a natural toussle and to let it drop out to a level you’re comfortable with.

Now for some texturising product. Don’t go for gels or anything shiny as we want this to be a matte-look hairstyle. You’ll want a product that’s a fairly thick putty or paste. A wax can also work. See below for recommendations.

Take a small amount and rub it into your hands, then work your hands through your hair being careful not to get any big blobs of product in a single area. To get a gritty, clumpy texture through the hair, try taking sections and twisting/rolling them between your hands, or scrunching up sections of hair for a messy toussle.

Products to use

There are several steps above where you’d benefit from some good hair product to really achieve the textured look. To help get you started with which you use, we asked Annika Bowen at Annika’s for some suggestions.

Dry Shampoo
You can use any Dry Shampoo for the first step (if your hair is a bit oily and you want to ensure you have a good matt textured). However, if your hair is dark / brunette and you don’t want a white powdery finish, Annika recommends trying Label.M’s dry shampoo for brunettes.

Volumising product
If you have fine hair, before doing any other styling you’ll want some volume at the roots. Annika suggests trying Root Boost by Tigi for a grittier texture (it’s a spray-in mousse) or Small Talk by Tigi for plenty of body and volume.

In the Pistols at Dawn campaign (pictured), Redken Dishevel Fibre Cream was used. Another suggestion by Annika is Tigi Bedhead for Men Matte Separation Wax, or Sebastian Craft Clay. Note that with the clay product you’ll need to warm it up in your hands first before you apply it.

Sexy, sensual, and most of all suggestive. Bed hair is one type of hairstyle that not only looks good but implies whatever you want it to imply, be it lazy sunday morning carelessness or pure, unadulterated sex appeal.

But while looking like you just rolled out of bed can sometimes be achieved by doing just that, it’s not always so forthcoming. You want to look like Brigitte Bardot, not like you simply belong in your pyjamas.

Side bed hair

For a variation on the center part, this tutorial is aimed at achieving tousled bed hair with a sexy, deep, side part.
