We’ve all had that time when we styled our hair for a night out, slept on it because we’re too tired and the next day we wake up loving the hairstyle even more. For the Marc Jacobs spring / summer 2013 show, this slept in style was incorporated with one of the biggest hair trends of 2013: namely, 1960s hairstyles. The result is a teased, ’60s bouffant look that looks a bit rough around the edges.

It was Guido Palau, Redken’s Creative Consultant, who was behind this chic vintage inspired look. He personally describes this look as “a styled-then-slept-in look: this girl had a glamorous hairstyle the night before, and this is it the moment she gets up the next day and is maybe walking down the street for a coffee”. Lucky for us, getting this gorgeous slept in look is easy and we’ve got the steps right after the break.

How to: Marc Jacobs slept-in sixties hair

Start working on this look by prepping damp hair with some volumizing spray. This will give that sixties volume you will need.

To get the sleek ponytail that’s at the back of this look, you’ll next need to blow dry your hair straight.

Create a deep side part. The one for this look is done on the left and it really doesn’t have to be a clean part.

Now it’s time to get that ’60s volumized look. For the Marc Jacobs show Redken’s quick tease 15 was used. If you are using this, hold up sections of your hair up straight and then spray it on the roots. Continue holding it up as it dries and just let it fall. Do this all over for a really volumized look. In the absence of tease spray, you can always go back to classic teasing.

Gather all your hair into a low ponytail but make sure you leave some height on top for that bouffant look.

For an extra matte finish, you can dust some mattifying powder like Redken’s powder refresh 01.

Finish the look off by pulling a few wisps out of your ponytail. This will add to that slept in look.

This look is perfect for day and night, casual or a bit formal. It is a hairstyle everyone should try and it will surely add extra “chic” to any ensemble.

How to: Versace’s easy & undone long summer hair

Contrary to the glamorous slick ‘dos often seen at Versace, the brand’s spring / summer 2013 fashion show featured a hairstyle that was laid back, flowing and summery. The man behind this look is Redken Creative Consultant, Guido Palau and he describes this look as “effortless, very dusty – think of the desert and the beach”.

With that being said, this is surely a 2013 hairstyle worth wearing. Effortless yet sexy, this summer hairstyle is very easy to do. Check out the steps right after the break.

This undone hairstyle is perfect for those with long hair and generally any hair color, may it be striking blonde or a gorgeous brunette. Here are the steps on how to get this look for yourself.

How to: Versace’s undone, long summer hair

Wash your hair as you normally would and let hair air dry for a while. You can use a big tooth comb to rid your hair of tangles.

On damp hair, apply some volumizing spray to create volume on your hair. For the Versace show Redken guts 10 volume spray foam was used.

Rough blow dry your hair using your fingers. You can also scrunch it up as your dry it for more texture.

Now it’s time to set your hair and this is very easy. All you have to do is to gather all your hair and twist it into a bun. To add extra texture, spritz on some dry shampoo like Redken powder fresh 01 on the bun.

Take your hair out of the bun and then dust on some mattifying hair powder like Redken Powder grip 03. Do this from roots to end to realy get that matte effect.

This look is perfect to wear for a fine summer’s day or a day out on the beach. It’s a very natural and effortless hairstyle that will look good on practically anyone.

Dad Uses Vacuum to Give Daughter Perfect Ponytail, Advanced Method!

The other day, a few of our viewers sent us a viral video on Youtube of a talented dad making a ponytail with a vacuum cleaner. The original video was called " Dad Uses Vacuum to Give Daughter Perfect Ponytail in 5 seconds."  Of course, after seeing the video, we had to give it a try! (After cleaning our vacuum hose first of course.  ;)

Formal Hairstyles, Sideswept Braids and Curls

A "Fancy Schmancy" Hairstyle for Prom, Homecoming, Weddings, Flower Girls, Valentines Day, and other special occasions!

This Bohemian braided hairstyle would be lovely for many special occasions. The curls and soft, messy braids are very "princessy." :) If you are looking for a romantic hairstyle for Valentines Day, this could work! 

We're loving braided flowers and roses made from hair lately, as they are quite easy to make and so cute! If you want to add some "bling" to the center of the flower, that would definitely make this hairstyle stand out.

We used a regular old standard curling iron to create the soft curls in this hairstyle. You could use a curling wand if you prefer, or a no heat curling method. If you have natural curl, even better!  You could also leave your hair straight if you want to. 

Sideswept hairstyles are nice for occasions when you want to leave your hair mostly down, while still looking "done" but not "over done."  ;)  I'm thinking this could be perfect for a beach wedding!

How to: the messy bun at Marni

As we enter a more relaxed season, specifically spring / summer, it’s only natural that we get comfortable with the less uptight looks. As we temporarily do away with our winter garb, we welcome effortless, messy up dos that clearly reflect the characteristics of the new season.

These hairstyles were seen in the different fashion shows for spring / summer 2013 and a stand out was that of Marni. The messy bun featured on the show is a 2013 hairstyle that anyone can easily pull off. This is a hairstyle that relies on the side part which is also a hair trend for this year. Organic, effortless and very real are some words that best describe this up do created by hairstylist Paul Hanlon and we are lucky enough to have a how to for this look which you can read after the break.

Melbourne hairstylist Annika Bowen happily walked us through the steps on how to get this messy bun:

How to: messy bun hairstyle

Prepping the hair is most important. This style is great if you don’t have time to wash your hair and it’s a bit dirty and already been styled a few days prior. This means you will already have natural texture in your hair which will help hold the style. If you have oily roots, use a product like Tigi Catwalk Session Series Dry Shampoo: spray this from roots to end to achieve beautiful texture, freshness and matte look.

If you’re working from freshly washed hair: use a gritty product like Tigi Catwalk Your Highness Root Boost or Tigi Catwalk Session Series Salt Spray. You can use both products on wet and dry hair. Use a hair dryer on low to dry products into hair to achieve the desired texture and hold. This will give you that matte dirty hair feeling.

If you are letting your hair dry naturally just towel dry really well. Shake your fingers through your hair and then spray salt spray through mid lengths and ends. You can tie your hair up in a messy bun to help create movement and texture. Let hair out again once it’s almost dried and then scrunch to enhance natural movement.

Once hair is prepped you can start styling by creating a side part using your finger. Remember this is a messy bun so you don’t want a sharp parting. Having your hair a bit frizzy or fly away also works on your favor. Use your finger tips to flatten your hair slightly and then brush down to the sides and back.

Now it’s time to work with a fringe section. Take a section of your hair in front and use a pin curl clip to help hold a fringe section (your bangs / loose strands in the front section) away and across your face. Spray with a hair spray (Annika suggests Tigi Session Series Work It Hairspray), this will give you control and shape the fringe section.

The outcome of this look depends on your hair length but you can also create this look even if you have short hair. If medium to long, it’s best to pull hair into a pony tail at center nape of head. Use your fingers to slightly tease. To do this grab bottom of ponytail with one hand and use other hand/fingers to push hair up to where hair elastic is tied.

If your hair is short to medium and you don’t have heaps of hair to put in ponytail, you can still do this but will need more bobby pins to hold everything in place.

Now it’s time to make the bun: You can then either twist your hair and tie it into a knot or grab ends of hair and make a fist and roll hair up and into a bun on top of hair elastic.

For shorter hair: Use your fingers to brush hair into a low ponytail and hold with one hand. Slowly twist and grab hair to make a ball of hair in your fist. Secure this with pins. (Tip – where you are holding hair with your fingers, place bobby pins there first. Then swap hands to see how loose it is and where more hold/pins are needed.)

It doesn’t really matter if you missed a bit and have slightly messy strands sticking out. Assess your hair with a back mirror and pin hair you don’t want sticking out back out of sight if desired. If you think your hair is too clean, then you can lightly pull on some areas or sections to create a messier look.

Secure your hairstyle with a hairspray that’s a brush-able one (like Tigi Session Series Work It). This will give your hair a natural shine and hold it without being to strong like a lacquer.

Finish this look off by taking out the pin curl clip on fringe section.

How to get Ryan Gosling’s Gangster Squad hairstyle

One of the most sought after leading men in Hollywood, Ryan Gosling has truly gone a long way since his Mickey Mouse Club days. Aside from his acting skills, Mr. Gosling is known for his impeccable style that makes women from all over the world swoon. He kicks off this year with a movie set in the 1940s-50s. Gangster Squad will be shown in theaters soon and with a roster of incredibly talented actors, it’s creating quite a buzz.

There is another thing that caught our eye: Ryan Gosling’s hairstyle in this movie. Smart, prim and proper yet with a tough undertone, this is a look that a lot of men will surely love to have as their 2013 hairstyle. Check out the how-to for this vintage inspired look after the break.

How to: Ryan Gosling’s Gangster Squad hairstyle

The first thing you have to consider is you haircut. For this particular hairstyle you need a cut that’s square on the sides and top. There is minimal texture on the hair and the sides are basically shorter than the crown and front. If you don’t have a cut that’s shorter at the sides and with a bit of length on top, you’ll probably need to visit your barber and ask for one before you can create this style.

Now it’s time for the styling: take some grooming cream and apply it all over your hair. Grooming cream makes your hair shiny and makes everything hold.

Next, blow dry your hair using your hands until is half-dried.

Take a comb and then continue blow drying your hair, combing the front of your hair backwards as you do. This will help to create volume.

Once it’s completely dry, add more hold and shine by putting on some hair wax all over your hair.

Finish this look off by taking your comb and creating a nice side part (Ryan Gosling does it on the left, and not too deep – i.e. a little closer to the center). You can also comb the front part of your hair towards the back if you think you need more volume there.

This look is a perfect combination of movie star and old school LA cop. Wear it with as much confidence as Ryan Gosling does and you’ll surely not go unnoticed.

Seashell Knotted Hairstyles

Today's hairstyle tutorial on "seashell knots" can be used to make a variety of knotted hairstyles.  Making just one knot (as shown below) is a quick and simple every day style for girls, teens, or even moms. Or, you can bring the knots all the way down her head for a cute seashell knot braid that resembles a french braid (as shown above.)

The Princess named these knots "seashells" because of their unique shape! Do you see the resemblance? ;)

I'm loving how this braided variation of the knots turned out quite intricate looking.  As you can see in the close up below...almost like a maze! 

If you prefer to leave your hair mostly down, one single knot is a very simple, sweet, and elegant look.  This hairstyle is casual enough for every day wear (school, work.)  But also is fancy enough for a special occasion. *Please excuse the semi-blurry picture, it's a screen shot of our video!
