The late 80s to early 90s was known for their rock ‘n’ roll scene. Artists like Axl Rose were the rock icons of that time, and for the Versace spring / summer 2014 show, they served as the perfect inspiration.

This laid back rocker chic look is a little androgynous. Reminiscent of the LA rock scene of the era, it’s simple yet still makes the statement rock has always been known for. Guido Palau of Redken shared with us the steps on how to get this spring 2014 hairstyle for yourself.

How to: Versace ’90s rock chic hair

Start this look with clean hair. Wash your hair with a good quality shampoo and conditioner (Guido used Redken Diamond Oil).

To get that very natural texture, leave your hair to dry after you’ve applied some volumizing spray or mousse. Redken Rootful 06 was used for the show. Apply the spray or mousse from root to tip for best results.

Next, create a clean center part and comb your hair with a wide tooth comb. This will fix your hair without compromising it’s texture.

Enhance your hair’s natural texture by applying dry shampoo or aerosol hair powder like Redken Powder Refresh 01.

If you find that your hair is still too straight or “fixed”, take a 1-inch curling iron and loosely curl your hair. This will create natural waves on your hair.

How to get Arizona Muse’s gorgeous textured bob

It is undone but in a way that reads sophistication, and more importantly that allows for free movement and easy styling.

How to: Arizona Muse’s loose, textured bob

Begin working on this hairstyle by prepping up. On towel dried hair, apply a good amount of a light styling oil. This will help build the hold, adding body, while also cohering the wet texture.

Proceed in blow drying the hair using small circular motions. Instead of trying to create volume by blow-drying your hair with your head hanging upside down, try tilting your head sideways, blow drying in the opposite direction to how your hair normally falls.

Flick the hair back once it is about 90% dry and start working towards creating the waves. To do this, pick small sections of hair, roll them around a medium size round bristle brush and finish off blow drying the hair. This will help build movement from roots to ends.

With each new wave you create, make sure you pin in up, allowing it to cool off without the added weight. This is important, as the cooling off time is what helps the movement persist.

Next, brush your hair completely using an oval paddle pure bristle brush to relax the waves, and to give your hair volume but also perfect luster. The more natural you want your hairstyle to appear, the more you need to brush your hair.

To finish off the look and give it that signature element of moisture, apply a natural styling oil beginning at the mid-lengths and working your way towards the ends.

For more of an absolute wet hair look, you can apply the oil all throughout the hair and allow it to morph into a full new statement.

How to create a modern men’s pompadour

Vintage inspirations have been particularly strong for men’s hairstyles, a fact which has carried through to 2014′s hair trends. The pompadour of the ’50s and ’60s – the hairstyle made famous by the King of Rock n’ Roll, Elvis Presley – is one of those that’s cropped up again, giving men a tough yet slick vintage vibe that’s relatively easy to create.

In this modern version the hair has a slight side part rather than being slicked entirely back. Keeping it a bit shorter and a little bit more effortless creates a pompadour that’s cool without being too time-warped.

Below, steps on how to create the modern men’s pompadour for yourself.

How to: tousled modern men’s pompadour

At Roccobarocco’s spring 2014 men’s show, hairstylist Beppe d’Elia created a rockabilly-inspired pompadour that was “more messy, more fresh and modern.” The shape here is a little flatter and more haphazard while still retaining the pompadour shape. Note that you’ll need some length in both the top and sides (particularly the top) in order to carry this look off.

d’Elia stresses that dry texture is important to creating this look. Hair that’s too soft won’t stay in place, after all.

Wash the hair, then blow-dry it backwards away from the face until completely dry.

To get the dry texture required, spray the hair with a dry shampoo at the roots, then comb it through the hair with a wide-tooth comb.

Work a dry wax through the hair by first rubbing it into the hands then spreading it back through the hair with your fingers. Shape the hair as you apply the product: you’ll want to smooth the sides directly back, while styling the front upwards and to one side in a pompadour shape.

Tip: For a dry finish and plenty of hold, try Sebastian Matte Putty.

Keep shaping the hair with more dry wax until you’ve reached a shape you’re happy with. You can use a bristle brush to work the hair into shape, or simply use your fingers for a messier finish.

If you need extra hold, spray the finished look with hairspray.

How to: slick modern men’s pompadour

American Crew hair stylist Dean Tsopanis explains another variation on how to get a modern pompadour, as styled for the men’s black and white shoot below.

Wash the hair with your favourite shampoo and conditioner. If your hair is fine, you may want to use a volumising shampoo (Dean Tsopanis recommends American Crew Thickening Shampoo).

Dry the hair and apply American Crew Boost Cream, running your fingers through the hair and working into the side part of your choice.

To add texture, movement and height, follow by applying a small amount of American Crew Forming Cream and work through areas where you want texture and volume.

Finish off with a light mist of American Crew Boost Powder.

Voilà – Elvis is back, only ready to face the modern day.

What’s great about this look is that despite the vintage or classic inspiration, it remains modern and not dated. This hairstyle is perfect to spice up any outfit casual or formal.
