6 simple hair tricks that will change your morning routine

DIY your own dry shampoo.

Great for solving morning hair emergencies, the dry shampoo can be easily recreated at home using a super-easy recipe and few household ingredients that you most likely already own. Working as a great alternative to soaking up the oils that make your hair look greasy, try mixing 1/4 cup of cornstarch and a tablespoon of baking soda in a small jar, if your hair is light colored. For darker hair, simply add in two tablespoons of unsweetened cocoa powder. Once everything is blended together, sprinkle a small amount of product in your hands, work it gently into your hair, let it sit for a moment and then brush your hair to remove the powder, and all of the oil will vanish with it!

Keep the flyaways under control.

Flyaways have a tendency of getting in the way of your perfectly great styling techniques, appearing all the more irritating in the early mornings. Give them a quick fix using nothing but an old toothbrush and a little bit of hairspray. Once sprayed with the hairspary, run the toothbrush over the rebellious hair strands to set them under control. This trick prevents the use of unnecessary products that most of times work only in weighting your hair down.

The 10 minute rule.

Ever wondered why the promised results fail to make an appearance despite of you using all the right hair products? In most cases, is just a matter of handling the time right. Remember to always apply your choice of products 10 minutes before actually styling your hair whether you plan on curling, straightening, or fixing your locks in an easy hairstyle. These 10 minutes that you can spend doing your make-up instead, will ensure that the products will be completely absorbed into your strands, leaving you with a complete set of benefits.

California-girl waves done easy.

If you’re after some quick and easy obtainable beach waves in the morning, make mousse your new BFF. Put a blob of product in your hand (golf ball-size if your hair is short, baseball-size if your hair is longer). Tilt your head to one side, crumple up the hair from the ends to the roots and repeat the technique on the other side. Allow your hair to air-dry and proceed to style it further only if needed, making sure to use your fingers instead of a brush. Otherwise leave the hair untouched for more of a disheveled result.

Treat your hair with a blast of cold.

Now this trick might sound mildly unpleasant, but the smooth result will totally be worth it. Before you get out of the shower, switch to cold water for a few seconds and use it to rinse your hair rapidly. The cold water helps seal the cuticle, promising to add a sleek finish to your locks.

Make bobby pins stay put.

A few bobby pins used creatively always help in styling your hair both super pretty, and super quick. But if you’re one of the girls who avoids the use of bobby pins because of their tendency to slide out ever so easily, fear no more. What you have to do to avoid the slippery part is place your bobby pins on a paper towel, spray them lightly with a dry shampoo or a hairspray, and allow them a short minute to dry. Your fine, straight or thin hair will totally enjoy the extra hold.

How to: Versace’s flowing rock-chic hair

The late 80s to early 90s was known for their rock ‘n’ roll scene. Artists like Axl Rose were the rock icons of that time, and for the Versace spring / summer 2014 show, they served as the perfect inspiration.

This laid back rocker chic look is a little androgynous. Reminiscent of the LA rock scene of the era, it’s simple yet still makes the statement rock has always been known for. Guido Palau of Redken shared with us the steps on how to get this spring 2014 hairstyle for yourself.

How to: Versace ’90s rock chic hair

Start this look with clean hair. Wash your hair with a good quality shampoo and conditioner (Guido used Redken Diamond Oil).

To get that very natural texture, leave your hair to dry after you’ve applied some volumizing spray or mousse. Redken Rootful 06 was used for the show. Apply the spray or mousse from root to tip for best results.

Next, create a clean center part and comb your hair with a wide tooth comb. This will fix your hair without compromising it’s texture.

Enhance your hair’s natural texture by applying dry shampoo or aerosol hair powder like Redken Powder Refresh 01.

If you find that your hair is still too straight or “fixed”, take a 1-inch curling iron and loosely curl your hair. This will create natural waves on your hair.

How to get Arizona Muse’s gorgeous textured bob

Working towards making the bob haircut equal parts cool and unpredictable, while still entirely relevant amongst spring 2014′s hair trends, Arizona Muse’s effortless loose, textured hairstyle from the Witchery autumn / winter 2014 campaign bets on natural seduction. It is undone but in a way that reads sophistication, and more importantly that allows for free movement and easy styling.

How to: Arizona Muse’s loose, textured bob

Begin working on this hairstyle by prepping up. On towel dried hair, apply a good amount of a light styling oil. This will help build the hold, adding body, while also cohering the wet texture.

Proceed in blow drying the hair using small circular motions. Instead of trying to create volume by blow-drying your hair with your head hanging upside down, try tilting your head sideways, blow drying in the opposite direction to how your hair normally falls.

Flick the hair back once it is about 90% dry and start working towards creating the waves. To do this, pick small sections of hair, roll them around a medium size round bristle brush and finish off blow drying the hair. This will help build movement from roots to ends.

With each new wave you create, make sure you pin in up, allowing it to cool off without the added weight. This is important, as the cooling off time is what helps the movement persist.

Next, brush your hair completely using an oval paddle pure bristle brush to relax the waves, and to give your hair volume but also perfect luster. The more natural you want your hairstyle to appear, the more you need to brush your hair.

To finish off the look and give it that signature element of moisture, apply a natural styling oil beginning at the mid-lengths and working your way towards the ends.

For more of an absolute wet hair look, you can apply the oil all throughout the hair and allow it to morph into a full new statement.
