How to: Dior’s 1950s wet chignon

Every season has trademark hair trends that stylists interpret in different ways and for fall 2013, a reoccurring hair trend is the wet look or hair that’s glossy and shiny. For the Christian Dior fall 2013 show at Paris fashion week, Redken’s Guido Palau created a hairstyle that utilizes the shiny wet look yet still features a classic detail. The result was a 1950s chignon fit for the modern woman.

This high ponytail chignon was made to work well with the collection which was the real inspiration of this look. Elegant, sophisticated and a good mix of modern vintage, this 2013 hairstyle is one that everyone should try and we’ve got the how to right after the break.

How to: Dior 1950s wet-look chignon

The first step in getting this look is to prep your hair. Do this by taking sections of your damp hair and then applying volume spray like Redken guts 10 root targeted volume spray foam. This adds volumes to the roots area and lets you get the texture of this hairstyle.
With a blow-dryer, take the front section of your hair and dry it partially. To give volume or style height on the crown of your hair, use your fingers to pull up on the roots as you dry your hair. Make sure you leave the ends of your hair damp.
Now it’s time to section your hair. Part your hair slightly off-center with your fingers. Then take the top section of the hair that you blow-dried and clip off to the side.
Gather the rest of your hair into a high ponytail and secure it with an elastic.

Twist your hair until you get a chignon and secure it with bobby pins. Make sure the chignon is secured flat on your head.

Unpin the front section of your hair and divide it into two on the left and right side of the part. Pull the left section back into the and wrap it around the chignon. Secure it with a bobby pin and do the same to the other section.

The last step is to secure the entire hair with hairspray like Redken’s froceful 23 super strength finishing spray. This keeps the hairstyle together and gives it that wet look shine.

This hairstyle proves that being elegant does not equate to being boring. A good mix of texture, shine and a classic chignon, this look is one that has a place in a modern woman’s hairstyle arsenal. You’ll never know when you’ll need it.
