How to: Dolce & Gabbana’s ‘Italian Princess’ chignon

Romantic opulence is what best describes Dolce and Gabbana’s fall 2013 collection. Fit for royalty, the collection was inspired by the Byzantine era and the many different textures that define it. Naturally it was only a hairstyle fit for a princess that could go hand-in-hand with the collection. And that’s precisely what was devised by Guido Palau of Redken for the catwalk.

Inspired by both the royalty overtones and the Romantic opulence, Guido created a hairstyle that elevated the chignon to a whole new level, giving it an air of romance along with both a dash of elegance and softness. He wanted the look to be something like a woman who was born into luxury and style would wear and the result was a hairstyle fit for the modern-day queen who needs no crown to show the world just how regal she is. There’s no need to hire your own personal stylist to create this look, however, because, as with all the on-trend hairstyles we cover, you can have it in a few, easy steps. Check out our complete how to after the break.

Start by applying volumizing spray on your damp hair from roots to end. For the Dolce & Gabbana’s showing, Redken Guts 10 Root Targeted Volume Spray Foam was used. This helps make the hair styling process easier along with giving your hair the volume required of this hairstyle.
Next, blow dry your hair with a round brush.
Apply some all purpose or finishing spray such as Redken’s Quick Tease 15 Backcombing Finishing Spray to the crown of your hair, section by section. Hold each section for a few seconds to dry before moving onto the next section. This will let the spray set on your hair.

This chignon hairstyle requires a particular volume on your crown best described as both light and airy. To get the right volume needed, backcomb your hair once the finishing spray has dried. It’s recommended that you use an oval boar bristle brush.

Next, create a very small (about an inch), off-centre part. Gently brush hair from front to back starting behind that parted section and then create a chignon. Make sure the chignon is flat against your nape before you secure it with bobby pins. Remember to retain the volume on the top section of your hair for that soft, romantic look.

Finish this hairstyle off by misting a little bit hairspray for shine. For the catwalk, Shine Flash 02 Glistening Mist by Redken was used.
