Scallop Edge Braid Tutorial

A Unique Braided Hairstyle For Long Hair and Medium Hair

We have been enjoying this fun "scallop edge braid" and have used it to make a variety of cute hairstyles recently!

There was a picture posted on our facebook page awhile back by one of our readers, which was a french braid or dutch braid with the edges of the plait flared out and woven.  We decided to try and recreate that braid, but without the french braiding (to simplify it a bit) and this is how it turned out! Btw, I wish I could find that picture now to show you. But, facebook has made some changes to the way things are displayed on our page and I'm finding it very difficult to find older pictures on there now.  UGH.

Her hair is getting quite long now, isn't it? I'm loving it with curls! I think this would be a cute hairstyle for a flower girl, wedding, church, recital, school, or even a renaissance faire.

P.S. If you are a regular to our site, and after watching the video... you may have recognized the technique used to make this braid from our Chain Link Braid Headband video (which used knots instead of a braid.)

• Below is one more fun variation to try with this braid!

(This picture probably won't make any sense unless you have already watched our video above.)  But, instead of bringing the top strand underneath the 3 strands as shown in our video... try weaving it over and under the 3 strands, and then add it into the braid (as shown below.)

Making this slight change as you are braiding will result in the braid turning out much more intricate!

Karlie Kloss’ new hair: it’s a bob

When a top model gets a haircut, it’s kind of a big deal. A new hairstyle can make or break a model when it changes their entire look (here’s looking at you, Ruby Jean).

Karlie Kloss is the latest to go for a drastic change, revealing a short bob backstage at the Victoria’s Secret 2012 show (though it was promptly made more Angel-like by way of extensions).

An Easy, Quick, And Cute Hairstyle

We have had many requests from you guys lately for simple hairstyles.... as well as hair styles that can be done on yourself. This "pineapple braid" is a quick, cute, and easy "no heat" hairstyle that is great for school, work, dance, or other occasions.  We actually posted a similar style way back in 2008 (around the time we first starting "hair blogging") but never made a video for it until now.  The Princess wears this hairstyle to school quite often since it can be created in less than 5 minutes and we are not morning people! 















The Princess's dad named this braid for us. He thinks this hairstyle looks just like a pineapple or a palm tree.  I have to agree!

This style should work with medium hair, long hair, curly hair, or straight hair, and can be done on yourself with a little practice. You can create any type of braid you would like to change things up (including a rope braid, 4 strand, 5 strand, etc.) This technique can also be used to create 2 "spiked" pigtails, as well as a half up style. 

Supplies needed:

• 1 elastic

• A couple of bobby pins

Completely non hair blog related. BUT have you ever felt "obligated" to dress up as something for a Halloween function but not have the time or desire to dress up? (Yeah, I'm not really one of those "fun moms.") Here's a solution..... A quick and easy Halloween costume! No sewing or painting required, hehe. Can you guess what it is?? It's a "cereal killer!" (Serial Killer) All you need for this "costume" is: 5 minutes, a box of cereal, a knife, and some tape. If you wanted to get more creative you could use some fake blood! There you have it; the quickest, easiest, costume I could think of.

Halloween Hairstyles, Braided Spider Bun

A Spooky Spider Hairstyle!

This fun braided spider hairstyle would be great for Halloween, Trick or Treating, a Halloween party, or crazy hair day at school.

The basic idea for this spider hairdo came from one of our readers (Jill) who posted a picture of her little girl wearing a spider on her head on our facebook page a couple of years ago! The Princess and I have been anxiously awaiting for Halloween to come around again to give this creepy style a try.

This hair style would be cute all on it's own, or could go with several Halloween costume ideas (a witch, vampire, zombie, etc.)

Supplies needed:

• 4 pipe cleaners (which can be found in any craft store) to create the spider legs.

• 2-3 hair elastics.

• Several bobby pins. 

• An optional scary spider face (which could be made many different ways.)  We used a little pom pom and some googly eyes for ours. 

If you don't know how to french braid, or want to make this style easier and quicker, you can skip the upside down french braid up the back of her head and just start the spider bun in a standard high ponytail.

Of course, this doesn't have to be just a hairstyle for Halloween.  Without the extra legs and spider face, this turns out to be a lovely elegant updo that could be worn for many occasions! We love how the upside down french braid sort of blends right into the bun.  We opted for a braided bun this time, but... a sock bun, messy bun, twisted bun (or any type of bun you like) can be substituted.

Fishtail Braid Bohemian Pigtails

 A Hunger Games Inspired Hairstyle

These fun fishtail braid pigtails are inspired by a hairstyle I remember seeing in the Hunger Games Movie (although I don't exactly remember which character wore them.) I think I was paying more attention to the many braids and hairstyles than the actual movie itself when I watched it!  I'm pretty sure it was either a "Glimmer hairstyle" or a "Prim hairstyle".... also I did change the hairdo up a bit from the image I had in my head, just to make it our own.  Another fellow hairstylist (which I adore) on Youtube recreated a similar style from the movie awhile back as well and I thought it was so darling. You can find her video here- Letsmakeitup1 for a few more cute ideas if you like this type of  braided style.

My daughter loves this look because the pigtails seem more "grown up" than the usual variety. I  think these pigtails could work for older girls as well as little girls. I may even wear my hair like this if it were long enough!  We're both loving anything with fishtail braids right now and anything "Bohemian" looking. Since this style is more of a relaxed look, you don't need to worry about getting the parts straight or braiding perfectly.  Just go with the flow!  If I did this hairdo again, I may even add some waves  or curls to her hair first, to give it a little more texture.

Fishtail Braid Pin Back Hairstyle

Fishtail Braid Hairstyle, Taught By ~ The Princess!

This fishtail braid (or fishbone - herringbone braid) "pin back" is a very quick and easy way to keep your bangs out of your face (while adding some style) when you want to leave your hair down. Our 9 yr old Princess came up with this video idea and cute hairstyle all on her own!

I really love how she made the braid loose with the bobby pins exposed for some "bohemian flair!" If you want an even more disheveled looking braid, you could stretch out the outside edge of the strands before pinning the braid back.

As shown in the hairstyle video below, The Princess also came up with a great idea to help start the fishtail braid in an easier way.  She's a very smart girl if I must say so myself!

This braided hairstyle should work great with short hair, medium hair, or long hair.

Stripe Overlay Braid Hairstyle

A Unique Braided Hairstyle For Long Hair

Hey guys! I hope things are going well for you all. Here's another cute back to school hairstyle that really doesn't take too much time to complete.

This fun diagonal "stripe overlay" braided hairstyle will work best with long or medium length hair. 

Depending on the texture and length of the hair you are working with, you may need to add some pomade or gel to the "stripes" as you are braiding to avoid flyaways.  We have found that a little bit of water in a spray bottle does wonders for keeping things sleek and smooth.  The Princess's hair is naturally straight and fine though, so it's going to depend on your hair type of course.  If your hair is curly, wavy, or layered... you will probably need some product.

We pulled the front section of "The Princess's" hair straight back for this style.  But, if you like having some volume in the bangs/fringe area, you could definitely add a little "poof" in the front before you start the hairstyle. Just do whatever you like best.

  This hairstyle is kind of similar to a couple of styles we have done in the past: Our fancy princess french braids and our woven french braid hairstyle (although this hairstyle is quite a bit quicker and easier) as you don't need to french braid.  We actually have one more variation of this hairstyle filmed that we will be posting soon.  So, keep an eye out for that!  If you aren't already subscribed to our Youtube channel, feel free to do so by clicking here if you would like to be notified when we post our tutorials.

Stacked Waterfall Braid Side Ponytail Hairstyle

This "stacked waterfall braid" hairstyle is intricate looking, but actually is quite easy and quick to create... if you know how to waterfall braid (which is shown in our video tutorial below.) 

We thought this would be a cute hairstyle for school.  We like the Princess's hair up on most school days so that it's not in the way all day long or super tangled and snarly by the end of the day.

This is probably more of a hairstyle for long hair.  But, if your hair is on the shorter side, you might try making the braids as shown in our video and then tucking the short end back underneath the double braids and bobby pinning ~ to form a cute waterfall braid updo (instead of a side ponytail.)  Of course, even if you have long hair, you could make the updo work if you prefer it over the ponytail, or are wanting more of a special occasion hairstyle.

Depending on your preference, you could make this style a little more loose and tousled for a casual bohemian hairstyle.  The Princess's hair is so straight and fine that it's sometimes hard to achieve a cute "messy" look without adding some texture before we braid (and we usually don't have time for that, especially on a school morning.) If your hair is naturally curly or wavy, consider yourself lucky because the battle is halfway won for this type of style!

We love that braids are very popular and trendy for 2012 hairstyles. We never grow tired of them around here!

5 hair tutorial videos for creating tousled waves

When the occasion (or your timeframe) doesn’t permit a complex hairstyle, a tousled, effortless wave is every girl’s go-to. But even this relatively simple style can be improved or varied by using different products and techniques. Perfect for medium to long hair, a tousled waved hairstyle can be textured and beachy, just-out-of-bed sexy, or flowing and bohemian – it’s all up to how you style it.
