Halloween Hairstyles, Braided Spider Bun

A Spooky Spider Hairstyle!

halloween hairstyle ideas
This fun braided spider hairstyle would be great for Halloween, Trick or Treating, a Halloween party, or crazy hair day at school.

The basic idea for this spider hairdo came from one of our readers (Jill) who posted a picture of her little girl wearing a spider on her head on our facebook page a couple of years ago! The Princess and I have been anxiously awaiting for Halloween to come around again to give this creepy style a try.

Spider Hairstyle Tutorial, Halloween Hairstyle
This hair style would be cute all on it's own, or could go with several Halloween costume ideas (a witch, vampire, zombie, etc.)
Halloween Spider Web Hairstyle

Supplies needed:
  • 4 pipe cleaners (which can be found in any craft store) to create the spider legs.
  • 2-3 hair elastics.
  • Several bobby pins.
  • An optional scary spider face (which could be made many different ways.)  We used a little pom pom and some googly eyes for ours.

If you don't know how to french braid, or want to make this style easier and quicker, you can skip the upside down french braid up the back of her head and just start the spider bun in a standard high ponytail.

Of course, this doesn't have to be just a hairstyle for Halloween.  Without the extra legs and spider face, this turns out to be a lovely elegant updo that could be worn for many occasions! We love how the upside down french braid sort of blends right into the bun.  We opted for a braided bun this time, but... a sock bun, messy bun, twisted bun (or any type of bun you like) can be substituted.

P.S. We are trying some different lighting and background in this video (trying to improve the quality of our tutorials for you guys.)  Let us know if you find this video to be more clear (better) or worse than our old set up.  Thanks!

Fishtail Braid Bohemian Pigtails

 A Hunger Games Inspired Hairstyle

Hunger Games Hairstyles, Fishbone Braids

These fun fishtail braid pigtails are inspired by a hairstyle I remember seeing in the Hunger Games Movie (although I don't exactly remember which character wore them.) I think I was paying more attention to the many braids and hairstyles than the actual movie itself when I watched it!  I'm pretty sure it was either a "Glimmer hairstyle" or a "Prim hairstyle".... also I did change the hairdo up a bit from the image I had in my head, just to make it our own.  Another fellow hairstylist (which I adore) on Youtube recreated a similar style from the movie awhile back as well and I thought it was so darling. You can find her video here- Letsmakeitup1 for a few more cute ideas if you like this type of  braided style.

Hunger Games Braided Hairstyle
My daughter loves this look because the pigtails seem more "grown up" than the usual variety. I  think these pigtails could work for older girls as well as little girls. I may even wear my hair like this if it were long enough!  We're both loving anything with fishtail braids right now and anything "Bohemian" looking. Since this style is more of a relaxed look, you don't need to worry about getting the parts straight or braiding perfectly.  Just go with the flow!  If I did this hairdo again, I may even add some waves  or curls to her hair first, to give it a little more texture.

This hairstyle should work with long hair and medium hair, curly or straight.

I'm also thinking this could be a cute Halloween Hairstyle that would work with several different costume ideas. Pocahontas, maybe?

Picture Day Hairstyles 2012

A few hair ideas for picture day....
braided headband picture day hair

The Princess has actually had pictures taken "professionally" twice this year.  Once for picture day at school, and another time for our family pictures. My personal preference for picture day hair, is a simple and classic hairstyle that hopefully won't go out of style and look ridiculous in 20 years lol.  Something that looks nice from the front, but not too "overdone."  And, lets face it... no matter how cute you make the back of a hairstyle look, usually the back of the head isn't seen in the picture anyway!

Both of the styles we chose for our pictures this year were basic headband hairstyles.  In the photo above, we used the same partings from our Barbie Hairstyle that we actually used for picture day back in 2009.  And then instead of making a standard french braid for the headband, we opted for a pleated ribbon braid  (substituting a 4th strand of hair for the ribbon.)

In the pictures below, we washed her hair the night before and made pigtail french braids (one on each side of her head) while her hair was still damp.  In the morning, after the braids had dried, we took them out to form the waves and added a cute beaded headband.  Very simple, easy, cute, and quick!

For a little extra style, you could add a couple of braids with the headband as shown in the video below:

Feel free to share your picture day styles with us on Facebook.  I love to see what you guys are up to!

How to: textured rock ‘n’ roll hair

The Rag & Bone fall 2012 collection was all about sophistication with high cinched waists, riding jackets and a feast of fabrics from brocade to ikat knits. Complementary to the British countryside and Indian inspirations of the collection was the textured rock ‘n’ roll hairstyle that really added character to the whole look on the runway. The hair is rough and has a dreadlock-like wave that makes it look a little bit messy and unkempt with a bedhead feel.

Guido Palau created Rag & Bone’s fall 2012 hairstyle which is very textured, heavy with a cool grungy style. Palau mentioned that this hairstyle is “sexy but feels a bit more clumpy”. This would be a good change from your straight, clean and polished hair that you wear to work everyday. It’s a striking contrast to mix a flawless outfit with messy, textured rock ‘n’ roll hair. It is very easy to recreate at home with just four steps to follow so read on to find out how.

Rock chic hair how to

How to: textured rock chic hair

With your hair still damp, generously apply a volumizing mouse to lock in the texture. Part the hair in the middle and blow dry the hair using just your fingers instead of a brush.

If your hair is dead straight with no natural waves, use a 1 inch curling iron to get a little bend. Make the waves look very natural and a little messy. Tip: for messy waves, alternate between curling strands towards and away from the face.
Once the hair is very dry, use a sculptural paste (the team at Rag & Bone used Redken Rough Paste 12) that gives the hair a rough and ragged texture that is manageable. Twist the hair into long sections to create that chunky look that looks like dreadlocks.
To finish the look, roughen up the hair on the crown of your head to give it that sexy just-got-out-of-bed look. The mixture of mousse and paste makes the hair look tougher and more rock ‘n’ roll!

Hairspiration from Hannah Holman

Covering the latest issue of Lula is Hannah Holman, not only looking soft and pretty to a doll-like degree, but also providing some hairstyle inspiration manna for all your retro days. This is kind of like the bouffant double french twist we saw a lot of last spring (and again this season) – only with a bit of extra teasing for a delicately dishevelled bed-hair take.

The pairing with pastel dresses and blushing pink cheeks makes for a perfect combination.

The cover and shoot were photographed by Damon Heath for Lula’s fall 2012/winter 2013 issue.

Easy Messy Bun, Updo Hairstyles

A "Flip Braid" Messy Bun for Long Hair & Medium Hair

easy messy bun
In my opinion, the longer your hair gets, the harder it is to make a standard messy bun.  And, as you may have noticed, The Princess's hair is getting quite long!

I'm so excited we stumbled upon this method, because this messy bun (shown in our video tutorial below) is super easy and fun to make!  We have tried lots of different ways of making messy buns and I think this is our favorite for long hair & medium hair.
Messy bun for long hair
I love the "rolled" look of this bun without all of the effort that these types of updos usually require.  I'm thinking this bun is casual enough for every day wear, or could even work for a special occasion like a Homecoming or Prom hairstyle.  In the photo above, we accessorized the bun with a cute flower clip.  I think this would look adorable with a headband or other accessory as well.

Easy Messy Bun Video Tutorial:

As I mentioned in our video, we actually came upon this bun quite by accident.  The Princess was wearing a "flip braid" one day before a soccer game and wanted all of her hair up and out of the way for the game.  So, instead of taking the flip braid out, we wrapped it all up into a bun and this hairstyle was born!

Of course, if you would rather leave the hair down in the ponytail, the flip braid is super cute on it's own. Or, you can stretch it out as shown in our video for a fun "Princess Jasmine like" bubble ponytail!  In the picture below, the Princess is wearing a flip braid (stretched out) along with a chain on the side.  If you don't know how to make a chain, a video can be found here:  Chain Hairstyle

How To Pack Jewelry And Hair Accessories, Tangle Free

packing jewelry without tangles

A quick tip, just for fun! This video shows how to pack jewelry and accessories for a vacation without ending up with a huge tangled mess and lost items in your suitcase.

We actually came across this idea on Pinterest (which was linked to this video by Jessica Gottlieb.)  I thought the idea was genius!  I wish I would have came upon this sooner.

We happen to be going on vacation soon and decided we better share, since we were packing up our stuff anyway. ;)

This would also work great for those of you who sell jewelry or other small items.  I have a friend who sells "Paparazzi Jewelry" and another who makes her own beaded bracelets, necklaces, and earrings to sell.  I thought of both of them when I saw this.

Oh, and don't worry... we will still be posting a hairstyle later this week (as usual.) Can't wait!
