How to create a chic yet dishevelled knotted low ponytail

Trends always serve as a guide for hairstylist to create new styles and this year two of the biggest hair trends are the low ponytail and the wet look. Simple yet chic, these hairstyles has always been a favorite of women all over the world. Sophie Roberts of ghd made use of these 2013 hairstyle trends and gave them yet another new twist for the Alice McCall show at Australian Fashion Week (MBFWA): what resulted was a messy, knotted low ponytail.

For her latest spring / summer collection, Alice McCall took us on an underwater journey. Drawing inspiration from German botanist illustrator Ernst Haekel and the intricate detail of Art Nouveau jewellery, the collection featured beautiful cut-out lace pieces, Japanese organza and custom-prints. Sophie Roberts took inspiration from the collection itself and describes the knotted low ponytail as how a girl would look after she has gone swimming in the ocean. Lucky for us, we don’t have to head to the beach to get this look: we’ve got the how to right after the break.

How to: knotted low ponytail

Prep your hair by evenly distributing a mixture of ghd total volume foam and ghd smooth & finish serum to the hair, starting from the roots and working down towards the ends. This will help you style your hair with ease.
Comb hair using a ghd detangling comb into a rough side part that sweeps over the forehead.
Next, lightly ‘scrunch dry’ hair. Backstage at Alice McCall, hair was scrunched with the hands while being blown dry with the ghd air.
Gather hair into a low slung ponytail at the back of the head and secure with an elastic, allowing it to blouse out at the nape of the neck.

Separate the ponytail into small sections and create waves in each section using a styler like the ghd eclipse. Spray with ghd final fix hairspray for added hold and texture.
Create random knots and twists at the end of the ponytail, securing with a fine silicon elastic.
Gently pull hair away from the elastic at the hairline to encourage fly-aways for a slightly dishevelled finish.

Finish with ghd final shine spray for extra shine.

This hairstyle is a quick and easy way to keep your summer interesting. Whether you’re going out for some fun in the sun or a night out, this knotted low ponytail will surely add extra glam to your outfit without looking too uptight.
