How to create gorgeous retro waves, as seen at White Sands

One of the hottest hairstyles for summer are waves: not only are they reminiscent of the ocean, they also give off that sexy, care free vibe. For their spring / summer 2013 collection, White Sands teamed up with Redken to create a wavy hairstyle that made heads turn at Australian Fashion Week (MBFWA).

The White Sands collection featured swimsuits with soft prints and subtle 50s and 60s influences, which gave Redken Hair Director Paloma Rose Garcia the inspiration to create a retro wave hairstyle. This hairstyle is a mix of bombshell and class, of soft and sexy. It’s a hairstyle for 2013 that anyone can easily pull off and it’s not just for summer. Quick and easy to do, you can wear it with a swimsuit or a cocktail dress and we’ve got the how to right after the break.

How to: White Sands’ retro waves

Start by prepping your hair. Backstage at White Sands the team applied Redken Rootful 06 to the root area to give it lift.
To really give your hair the volume it needs, apply Redken Guts 10 to the roots and then work the product through the mid lengths to tips.
Next, completely dry off your hair with a blow dryer.

Create a low side part. You can use your eyes as a guide for this: use the center of your eye as the starting point then pull back diagonally to the crown.
Now it’s time to create your curls. Take a curling iron and start curling on the lower side, beginning with the lengths at the back. Make the curl hold by spraying on hairspray like Redken Fashion Works 12. Wrap the the section your just curled inward (towards your face) and then secure it with a bobby pin. For the relaxed wavy look, don’t curl your hair above your eyebrows.

Once you’re done curling all the sections of your hair, remove the pins and shape the waves with a soft bristle brush.
Finish the hairstyle with more hairspray to hold everything in place.

Creating waves in your hair is a very easy way to jazz up your look. While it may be a summer hairstyle, it’s still a great way to add fun and femininity to any ensemble for the other seasons.
