How to: bouffant headband hairstyle

When it comes to clothes that are classic and elegant with a feminine modern twist, Carolina Herrera always comes to mind first. Her fall 2012 collection was very dramatic so it’s not surprising that the fall 2012 hairstyle that came with it was just as remarkable. Who would have thought that the teased sixties hair with a headband can look so contemporary and perfect today?

The bouffant fall 2012 hairstyle from the Carolina Herrera show, created by Orlando Pita from Orlo Salon, is very BIG and it is clearly not practical to wear to off the runway (unless you want to add drama, of course!). But just by toning it down a notch you can create something highly wearable.

This hairstyle is very easy to learn but a lot of patience and time is needed before you can perfect the pumped up volume on you hair. Believe me, I have tried. With a bit of practice, though, you can make this bouffant headband hair your own.

How to: bouffant headband hair

The secret to all this volume is teasing your hair. Before this, you will need to have a base so you can easily style and lift your hair up. Spritz a volumizing and luminous strong hairspray over the hair and then blow dry it with a large round brush.

In half inch sections, spritz the volumizing hairspray and then start teasing it from the tips of your hair to the base. The more you tease it, the bigger the volume you will get so this will depend on how big you want your bouffant hair will be. (Quick tip: after teasing each section, smooth it over with a brush right away and then spritz with a holding spray to lock the volume and style.)

Continue teasing each section of hair until you have volume all over, then take a brush and smooth the hair back into a bouffant shape.

In the show, they used black grosgrain headbands and ribbons to finish up the look. There were different styles throughout the show and one style is for you to just put the headband (I suggest an elastic headband) over the hair and tie it up underneath.

The second variation from the runway adds a low ponytail to the look. You can use a long grosgrain ribbon, put it over your bouffant hair as a headband and wrap the ends of it like a bow around your hair into a low ponytail. You can play around with it and put your own twist to this fun bouffant headband hairstyle!
