How to create a traditional low plait hairstyle

Ponytails have two extreme styles. A high ponytail that is right on the crown of your head or a low ponytail that is close to the nape of your neck. For spring 2013, low ponytails are one of the big hairstyle trends. There have been a lot of variations of hairstyles that sit at the nape of the neck, and one example is this low plait hairstyle from Karla Spetic spring 2013.

The inspiration behind Karla Spetic’s collection are traditional Croation costumes with lots of embroidery, lace, intricate beading and embellishments and to directly complement the clothes is the hairstyle created by ghd’s Sophie Roberts. She mentioned that the hairstyle pays tribute to the Croatian roots of Karla Spetic. The hairstyle is a loose, low slung plait with a centre part. “The look exudes a youthful, feminine and romantic essence” according to Roberts.

It is the kind of 2013 hairstyle that you can wear throughout the year and not just during the spring because it is simple and easy to recreate. The steps to doing this hairstyle yourself is right after the break.

How to: the traditional low plait hairstyle

While your hair is still damp, create a centre part and distribute ghd total volume foam evenly from the roots to ends. Blow dry smoothly. Backstage at Karla Spetic the team used the ghd air and ghd ceramic vented radial hair brush.

Clip away hair from the centre part at the crown on top of the ear on either side of the head.

In small sections, smooth the hair with a heated iron like ghd’s eclipse. Spritz small amounts of ghd final fix hairspray and ghd final shine spray for shine and added texture.

Tuck your hair behind your ears and then divide it into 3 sections to start the braid. Plait the hair so it is slung loosely from the nape of the neck. After braiding, secure it with a silicon elastic band.

Finish off the look with a mist of ghd final spray for more shine.

You can wear this hairstyle on the weekdays at work or weekends when it is time to have cocktails and hang out with your friends. It is a very flexible hairstyle that will go with just about anything you wear.
